About Elspeth

I am a Graduate in Classics from St. John's College, University of Oxford. I have been teaching for six years now, both online and in person, one-on-one and for classes across a vast range of subjects. I focus primarily on English, Latin, History and Classical Greek, but have experience teaching Maths, Sciences, and Psychology. I have extensive experience preparing students for the 11+/13+, GCSEs and A-Levels: my English students consistently achieve the highest grades in public examinations, and admission to prestigious schools, including Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse and Winchester. Whether applying for school admission or public examination, I provide comprehensive courses that leave no space for the unexpected in a student's exams. I have experience across OCR, Edexcel, AQA and Eduqas exam boards at both GCSE and A-Level.

Many of my students have gone on to receive successful Oxbridge admission during their time with me, with three successful applicants in the last cycle alone. I've taught ages three to sixty-five, and am always excited to meet new students and work with various needs. I believe the student-tutor dynamic should be at the heart of a good tutoring set-up, and I have seen this proven in the excellent improvement and results of my past tutees. My students learn to love their subjects and develop a high level of understanding of the English language and the ability to critically consider texts and their contexts.

A little bit about my qualifications:
- Oxford Classics undergraduate degree.
- Four A*s at A-Level in History, Ancient History, Greek, Latin.
- 13 A*s at GCSE. - Prizes in international essay competitions, including the National College of the Humanities, Fitzwilliam College Cambridge.

And my experience:
- Over five thousand hours of private tutoring experience, online and in-person, across Latin, Greek, Ancient History, History, and English at KS1-3, GCSE, AS and A-Level, undergraduate and for 11+/13+ preparation.
- Supported students aged 4 to 63, helping them to achieve their goals, including top grades at GCSE and A-Level, successful university applications (Oxbridge and Russell Group), and high performance in competitive exams such as Eton’s King’s Scholarship.
- Worked with tutoring agencies, who specialise in preparing high-ability students for Common Entrance, with a particular international focus, and an agency preparing students for IELTS exams as part of their applications to British universities.
- Taught English grammar and speaking skills to classes of international students at Oxford-based holiday camps.
-Specialised in tailored tutoring for disadvantaged students, including those with autism, dyslexia, and dementia.

Voluntary Work
- Latin Mentoring with Local Primary School
- led a partnership programme, creating videos and resources to introduce children 9-11 to Classics.
- Science Mentoring with Local Primary School
- tutored underprivileged children at Fen Ditton Primary School, running weekly science lessons.

About the lesson

As a student myself, I'm acutely aware of what works and what doesn't - my lessons involve getting to know the student, and building a rapport to bring the subject to life! I love working with the students I teach to figure out their best approach to each topic; I believe this is the route to achieving the best results. My lessons are highly interactive, involving active learning and recall, and making use of a variety of resources to best fit any individual's learning style. I tailor my courses specifically to my students' goals, whether entrance exams or public assessments, with a focus on weaker areas. Continual recap and revision play an important role in my lessons, as evidence-supported routes to long-term understanding. I like to incorporate a significant amount of essay practice and discussion: many students struggle to understand what exactly it takes to write an outstanding English essay. I'm here to break that down into logical, understandable steps, which allow for significant progress even in a short period of time.

My students tend to enjoy my lessons, and develop a real love for their subjects! As a successful Oxford applicant, I'm also on hand to help with any application troubles - I'll be happy to read personal statements, give pre-interview test coaching and interview practice. I am on call outside of lesson time to provide support, or answer any questions. With six years experience teaching across all ages, I'm highly flexible and keen to work to each individual situation - please get in touch with all and any questions!

Perfect! We recently started lessons with Elspeth, and I’m already seeing such a positive change in my daughter. She is currently being tutored in both Maths and English for her 11+ exams, and in just a short time, her confidence has grown remarkably.
What’s been most heartwarming is how excited she is to meet Elspeth each day. She genuinely looks forward to her lessons, which says so much about the supportive and engaging environment Elspeth creates. Her ability to make learning enjoyable, clear, and empowering has made a huge impact already.
Elspeth has a wonderful way of building not just academic skills, but also self-belief — and that’s something we value deeply. I truly couldn’t ask for a better tutor, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to any family looking for exceptional 11+ preparation.
Thank you, Elspeth, for inspiring and encouraging my daughter with such warmth and dedication!

Perfect! During a recent family trip to Oxford, we had the pleasure of arranging a 5-day English tutorial for my daughter, Abigail, with Elspeth. Elspeth was exceptionally well-prepared and tailored the lessons specifically to meet my daughter’s educational needs. Not only did Abigail enhance her understanding of confusing grammar concepts through Elspeth’s clear and effective teaching methods, but she also gained a profound understanding of Oxford’s rich history, which added a meaningful dimension to our trip.

Elspeth’s ability to integrate the history of Oxford with structured English lessons was both engaging and educational. It is evident that Elspeth is passionate about teaching and goes above and beyond to ensure her students receive a comprehensive learning experience.

I highly recommend Elspeth. Her professionalism and dedication are outstanding, and she truly enhances the learning journey for her students.

Elspeth tutored my daughter in Latin across her GCSE years 10 and 11. Elspeth is an enthusiastic and positive tutor, taking a subject my daughter hated and explaining it clearly. Her grade improved greatly and we are very grateful to Elspeth for the 9 she got this summer. Thank you!

Elspeth tutored my daughter in GCSE Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. She was struggling in school and has mild autism, but an hour a week with Elspeth got her work up to a high standard ready for the GCSE deadline during coronavirus. Elspeth was really friendly and supportive, and went the extra mile. I am so grateful for her help.
