Fun, bespoke lessons with a 100% success rate, and many of my students achieving the highest grades. I am a fully qualified teacher (QTS) and former examiner, having taught nationwide in the UK for over thirty years in various posts, including the role of Head of English, and Whole School Literacy Coordinator, mainly in high schools (11-18), but I also have experience of teaching in the primary sector and colleges of further education. I am an expert in my subject areas of English, Literature, Linguistics including Stylistics, Creative Writing, Psychology & Drama. I have many years experience as an examiner of GCSE English Literature and I have examined A level English Language, and KS3 SATs when they were in operation. I teach English and Psychology at all levels, ages 5 to 105, including 11+ / Grammar School Entrance Exams ; ESL; GCSE / A level & Degree level. I achieved GBC with my MSc allowing me membership of The British Psychological Society (BPS). I am a qualified TEFL teacher ( Teaching English as a Foreign Language - 120 Hours cert. ) and also a qualified Teacher of Business English (TEFL - 30 hours cert). I currently teach students worldwide online, of all ages, and ability. I have successfully home schooled my son from age 7 to 16, including IGCSEs in English Language, Literature, Maths, Geography, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, thus I am fully versed in home schooling requirements, and welcome home schooled students. I also offer tuition to two / small groups of students if required.

I have had a varied and very successful teaching career to date. I use my expertise and experience of over thirty years, which has given me a very strong platform from which to teach, to maximise the potential of every student. I believe learning should be fun, and am passionate about helping students to achieve the highest level, whilst allowing a true appreciation of their chosen subject. I use an individualised and innovative approach, often exploiting my Drama skills to allow all learning styles to be accommodated. My students have always achieved their predicted grades, with many exceeding expectation. An A level English Language student of mine once achieved the highest mark in the UK on one particular paper of her chosen exam board.

I find online tuition extremely effective, as it allows a relaxed and safe environment providing the ideal learning experience. I enjoy the privilege of helping all students succeed, and realise their ambitions. If you wish to discuss anything further please contact me and I will endeavour to accommodate you.

Testimonials.

“My daughter has been working with Lizzie in preparation for her GCSE English Language and Literature exams this summer. My daughter has really enjoyed her lessons and has found Lizzie's teaching style very engaging and informative. Lizzie has amazing content knowledge, and a fantastic teaching style. My daughter's confidence has quickly grown in both subjects, and we are sure that with Lizzie's continued support she will do very well in her summer exams. In her mock exams, she scored an 8 in English Language and a 9 in English Literature. My daughter is autistic and due to social and sensory issues is homeschooled, Lizzie has been amazing in understanding her needs and has worked very closely with me to ensure that the lessons run smoothly. She is an amazing tutor and would highly recommend her to any student looking to ensure their GCSE English Language and Literature success.” (Mrs D.)

“I started with Lizzie approximately 8 weeks ago. I was predicted a B for my A level English literature. I needed to be predicted an A to apply to the university course I wanted and my teacher gave me the chance to try and improve my grade before my form went in. Lizzie has been so great in helping me improve and thanks to her my teachers have seen a great improvement in my work in that short time and I have now been predicted an A. She is familiar with all texts and goes out of her way to to be so helpful and works at a pace to suit you. I find her methods of teaching to be extremely effective and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her. I will definitely continue with Lizzie until my A level exams to ensure I get the best result I possibly can.” (Ms S.)

“Elizabeth is an absolutely incredible teacher. My daughter is currently completing her A Level English Language course and found the lessons extremely helpful. They are thoroughly prepared and Elizabeth taught my daughter a wealth of knowledge including many important techniques which not only helped her improve significantly in text analyses and writing skills, but also strengthened her confidence. The lessons are always enjoyable and have really increased my daughters love for the subject.” (Mrs M.)

Elizabeth tutored my daughter for 4 weeks (eleven plus preparation). My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her lessons with Elizabeth. Elizabeth reignited my daughter’s passion for English and really gets her. She aided her understanding of tricky concepts and exam pace. Assessing and addressing my daughter’s weaknesses swiftly. My daughter found the lessons so much fun. I would highly recommend her and hope to use her again in the future. Thank you.” (Mrs J)

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I fell into private tutoring after completing my first degree, after being asked to help a student with their English GCSE and an undergraduate who was struggling with her assignment, when I signed to a tutor agency in 1991. I found the experience very rewarding, especially when my GCSE student achieved a top grade from a low beginning and the undergraduate was so delighted with my help. This inspired me to teach and led me to complete a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education). I have subsequently had a very successful and rewarding teaching career of over thirty years, including examining work for major exam boards, the role of Head of English and Whole School Literacy Coordinator. I now tutor privately because I recognise the huge difference one to one / small group class input can make to an individual, be they struggling with a subject or aspiring to achieve top results.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English and Psychology to all ages including GCSE and A Level in both subjects. My first degree is in English & Drama, my MSc being in Psychology. I cover all exam boards, including International GCSE / A Level and IB qualifications. I like to facilitate independent thought, allowing originality and flair to come from the individual as opposed to teaching to the test. All my students have surpassed expectation and I find that my approach leads to outstanding results which stems from thirty years of teaching experience and examining work at GCSE & A Level standards.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

For me there are many role models in life. However, those who have inspired me and continue to, have the same 'I can do this' positive attitude. It is the 'I can do it' approach to all life's obstacles which makes the difference between success and failure. Sometimes one may not succeed the first time, but I admire the 'I will try again' approach. Don't be afraid of failure but learn from it and if it matters...try, try again.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, the qualities of a good tutor are reliability, subject knowledge and effectiveness. Now ask me what the qualities of an outstanding tutor are...all of the above, with the ability to think outside the box; the ability to switch pre planned lessons on the demand of the client according to immediate student need; the ability to engage with and understand the individual differences of each student; the ability to differentiate and create bespoke lessons; and most importantly the ability to add humour to sessions, facilitate confidence and always maintain the highest professional standards.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was seventeen, I made the faux pas of pronouncing Rudyard Kipling as 'Rood...eee yard'...instead of 'Rud yard' ... the whole A level class fell about laughing including the teacher! Rest assured; I never made the same mistake again! 😳😂
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge for me in my subjects has never altered...there are simply not enough hours in any life to read everything I wish to read.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about all aspects of teaching. We never stop learning and I love it when a student teaches me something new, whether it be a word I haven't come across before (Brobdingnagian was one example) or general knowledge trivia.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am a Superprof as I have a 100% success rate of students passing 11+/ 13+ Entrance Exams; a 100% success rate of students surpassing expectation; many of my students achieve the highest Level 9 at GCSE and A / A* at A Level; all have shown significant improvement, with one very famous renowned London public school commenting to an eleven-year old student's parents that they had produced the best literary / poetic analysis they had come across at that age. This was a skill we had spent much time on. If you want results, I believe I will get them for any student who is willing to engage.
