About Joanna
I am a professional who has worked in the childcare and SEND field for numerous years gathering a vast amount of differing experience as well as training, qualifications and furthering my natural skills and abilities along the way. I am based in North East London in Redbridge. I have experience of mild and specific learning disabilities all the way up to PMLD and complex needs with so much more in between. I frequently work with students with autism but I am also experienced in working with students with physical disabilities, behaviour that challenges, medical needs, nonverbal/non-speaking individuals and so much more. I have worked with learners who are d/Deaf (or HoH) as well as those who are blind/visually impaired with other physical and learning needs alongside. I have a lot of experience working with young people with cerebral palsy and other associated disabilities. Along with many different genetic abnormalities and global development delay and epilepsy. If your child’s needs or disabilities aren’t covered here right now it is still quite likely I will have experience or knowledge of working with individuals with similar needs, like most children I work with not everything or everyone fits in one box! I myself am also part of the neurodivergent and disabled communities.

When working with young people (especially those with SEN) I take an individualised child-centred approach. I like to encourage my students and celebrate them and their achievements as well as push them by believing in them and their individual abilities. I like to recognise that everyone is unique and we all have different obstacles and skills in life. Building relationships, trust and respect between one another is crucial in the work that I do. I often like to work creatively and frequently incorporate sensory aspects to my lessons listening to and recognising young people’s different sensory and physical needs. I like to make lessons fun and engaging for my students as much as possible whilst still improving their academic abilities and life skills. I encourage the use of sign languages particularly BSL and SSE and promote lots of alternative ways of communicating as well. I am experienced in some therapeutic practices as well as play, education and general care. I have a lot of experience working with children with complex needs through conductive education. I also have taught in mainstream schools too (active living sessions). Lesson lengths vary based on need and factors such as attention span of individuals. General minimum is 30 minutes though.

I have been fortunate to watch Joanna working with SEND children in a variety of settings from babies to young adults. She has a natural ability to relate to them and plans sessions according to the individual child’s needs and interests, so that they have fun while learning. Her kindness and patience combined with firmness when needed, shows her determination that each child will make as much progress as possible.
