About Ferrin

If you happened to stumble across my profile, you’ll probably notice pretty quickly that I really love writing. It has been a part of me for as long as I can remember, from getting completely lost in mystery and fiction books as a kid to creating stories of my own and eventually receiving encouragement and praise for my writing from my English professors in college.

I’m naturally curious, imaginative, and a little obsessed with the little details that can turn an ordinary sentence into something that actually makes you want to keep reading. I love figuring out how a story works, why a character feels believable, and how the right words can make you feel like you’re standing inside a scene.

When it comes to tutoring, though, I know that loving English isn’t enough. You also need someone who is patient, dependable, respectful, and genuinely interested in helping you improve.

That’s the kind of tutor I try to be.

I like creating a comfortable environment where you can ask questions, make mistakes, try something new, and figure things out without feeling judged. If we’re working on an essay, I’ll help you organize your thoughts and strengthen your writing rather than simply rewriting it for you. If we’re working on a story, I’ll help you develop the ideas and imagination you already have. And if grammar, punctuation, or proofreading is giving you trouble, we’ll work through it together.

I take communication and reliability seriously, too. I’ll come prepared, respect your time, keep our lessons focused, and give thoughtful feedback. I also believe that tutoring should always remain a safe, respectful, and appropriate learning environment.

Most importantly, I want you to leave a lesson feeling like you learned something you can actually use—not just like someone fixed your paper for you.

Whether you’re an aspiring young storyteller, someone who needs a little help with English, or a student staring at a blank page wondering where on earth to begin, I’d be happy to help you find the words.

About the lesson

1. Get to know you and what you’re working on We’ll talk about what you’re currently working on, what you enjoy reading or writing, your usual approach to assignments, what comes naturally to you, and where you tend to struggle, get stuck, or lose confidence.

2. Find and strengthen your voice We’ll work on your overall writing voice and figure out how you want your writing to sound and feel. Whether you want it to be more descriptive, emotional, mysterious, humorous, conversational, professional, or completely your own, we’ll work toward making your writing feel natural to you.

3. Identify what’s getting in the way We’ll pinpoint the areas where you need the most support—getting started, organizing your thoughts, staying focused, developing ideas, finishing a piece, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure, or proofreading.

4. Learn different writing techniques and styles Depending on your goals, we can explore and practice techniques such as: * First-person, second-person, and third-person narration * Switching between points of view * Dialogue and character voice * Descriptive and sensory writing * Showing vs. telling * Building suspense and mystery * Creating believable characters * Developing plots and story structure * Scene-setting and atmosphere * Transitioning smoothly between scenes * Flashbacks and changes in time * Pacing and building tension * Writing introductions and strong endings * Developing a consistent writing voice * Using imagery, figurative language, and symbolism

5. Review and improve your writing We’ll look at your work together and identify what is already strong and where it could be improved. We can work on grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, organization, clarity, flow, and word choice.

6. Create and practice For creative writing, we can brainstorm ideas, build characters, develop settings, create plots, or write a scene together. For academic writing, we can work through outlines, paragraphs, essays, and revisions.

7. Work together, not for you I’ll explain my suggestions and guide you through the process rather than simply doing the work for you. The goal is to help you understand your own writing and become more confident doing it independently.

8. Finish with a clear next step We’ll recap what you learned, what improved, and what you can practice before our next lesson so you always know where your writing is headed.
