About Clair
I am a Jewish Studies grad student currently working on my thesis, which involves language documentation among contemporary ex-Hasidic communities in New York. I also have an academic interest in folklore studies, historical Yiddish dialects, Yiddish poetry, Yiddish film, Yiddish modernism, and Jewish politics in the late 19th and early 20th century. Since beginning my Yiddish studies as an undergrad, I have completed multiple intensive programs and worked as a translator, research assistant at a Yiddish archive, language coach for film, and a transcriber and standardizer of Yiddish folksongs. I approach Yiddish as an expression of a particular culture, attitude, and worldview that extends well beyond grammatical rules and dictionaries. I am also always happy to give and receive great book recommendations.

I offer Yiddish language help for learners at all levels, providing language lessons as well as structured conversation practice tailored to individual goals. I teach contemporary Yiddish as a living language as well as historical dialects and literature, using images and guided language exercises.
