About Peter
I have been giving one to one piano lessons in Sheffield for over forty years. I teach students of all ages at all levels from complete beginners to diploma and in all styles including classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop etc. I regularly enter pupils for graded piano examinations but I also teach many students who prefer to learn simply for their own pleasure and satisfaction. I have learned to use a variety of teaching strategies as one method does not suit all. I taught advanced music theory for many years for Rotherham LEA and give one to one theory lessons at all levels and in all styles. As well as teaching I am a professional pianist and church organist with many years experience as a soloist and in various ensembles.
I now give all my one to one lessons online using Zoom. I use two external webcams so that I can switch the view that the student has of me from a side view to an overhead view of my piano keyboard (similar to the view in many YouTube tutorials), I am able to screen share musical notation which I can annotate using an I-pencil and use apps such as Classroom Maestro with a virtual keyboard with keys that light up as I play my real piano.I have a passion for music and I greatly enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience to help students to develop their skills and reach their potential.

I use a wide variety of teaching methods. In the early stages I find that many students make rapid progress learning by rote but I also encourage them to use musical notation. My students also learn about harmony and structure so that they fully understand the music they play and I also encourage them to improvise. I think that one of the most important things is finding pieces that students really enjoy playing so that practising is a pleasure.
