About Candice

I worked as a research assistant for the past eight years in analytical laboratories conducting biomedical research. I have over four years of teaching experience as a (1) Guest Lecturer for General Chemistry Honors II, (2) Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry Instructor for the Princeton Review, and (3) Teaching Assistant for General Chemistry labs. Over the past ten years, I have tutored for the University of Florida (UF) Athletic Association as a General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry tutor, UF and Santa Fe Community College Gen Chem and Orgo tutor, and CofC MSPS math/science tutor.

I generated practice tests and quizzes, taught and reviewed lecture material during each tutoring session, evaluated student progress on a weekly basis and provided written/oral feedback.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My mother, a retired educator, opened an after-school learning program when I entered the 5th grade. As part of the family business, I began tutoring students in elementary and middle school as well as assisting with the development of science fair projects. I realized very early that I had a special gift in "breaking down" fairly complex topics and explaining the content to a wide variety of audiences. She also inspired me to participate in STEM summer research programs as early as the 7th grade, which help me channel my love for Chemistry.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have over 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring students. During this time, I have worked with students in grade school (Pre-K) to those at the graduate level in reading comprehension, math, and science subjects. However, as a Chemist, my expertise is in math and science. I currently provide tutoring services for the following subject areas, which include SAT/ISEE/GRE/MCAT test prep:
IB Mathematics SL, IB Chemistry SL, Inorganic Chemistry, MCAT Biological Sciences, MCAT Physical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Pre-Algebra, Pre-Calculus, PSAT Mathematics, SAT Math, SAT Subject Test in Chemistry, Science, IB Chemistry HL, IB Mathematics HL, Test Prep, ACT, ACT Aspire, ACT English, ACT Reading, ACT with Writing, ACT Writing, ISEE- Lower Level, ISEE- Middle Level, ISEE- Upper Level, Algebra 1, AP Calculus BC, Algebra 3/4, Science, 10th Grade math, 11th Grade math, 12th Grade math, 7th Grade math, 8th Grade math, 9th Grade math, ACT Math, ACT Science, College Algebra, Algebra 2, Analytical Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Chemistry, Elementary Algebra, Elementary Math, General Chemistry, GRE Quantitative
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

As mentioned above, the teacher who inspired me happens to be my mother, a retired English and Social Studies middle school teacher, who actually taught me in the 7th grade.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should be passionate about the subject area and able to adjust his/her teaching approaches to accommodate the varying learning modalities of each student.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

There is still a lack of representation in the sciences for minorities and women, especially in leadership positions. I strive to be a trailblazer in my field and to overcome obstacles.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with friends and family, listening to jazz, riding thriller roller coasters at theme parks, and playing with my yorkie puppy whose namesake is my elemental initials, Copper (Cu). I have also taken up a passion for long-distance running and am in the process of training for a half-marathon next year.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I have found teaching/tutoring an ideal way to give back and provide assistance in difficult content areas. I generate practice tests and quizzes, teach and review lecture material during each tutoring session, evaluate student progress on a weekly basis, and provide written/oral feedback. Evaluations of my tutorial sessions have all received satisfactory ratings.
