About Sherna

I am a dedicated researcher and educator with a PhD in Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment. My research centres on analysing energy consumption in buildings, exploring how occupant behaviour influences usage, using mathematical techniques and artificial intelligence. I am passionate about teaching and have a talent for providing one-to-one tutoring, especially in supporting students to overcome challenges in mathematics. With a strong foundation in engineering and design, I am committed to fostering student growth and understanding through a personalised, non-judgemental approach.

About the lesson

As an Hourly Paid Lecturer at a university, I lead seminar sessions for first-year BEng Civil Engineering students and support scale-up sessions for first-year BSc Civil Engineering students. My role also involves marking exam papers and assignments. I teach a range of subjects, including Maths, Fluid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Engineering Skills (IT/Excel), and Maths for second-year Civil Engineering students. In my role as a private GCSE Maths tutor, I take a student-centred approach, tailoring each session to meet the unique needs and learning styles of my students. I believe in creating a supportive, judgement-free environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as part of the learning process. Using school performance data as a foundation, I design personalised interventions that address individual knowledge gaps and build confidence. I regularly assess progress, celebrate achievements, and adapt my methods to ensure continuous improvement. My ultimate goal is to help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and equip them with the skills needed to tackle exams with confidence. I work with students of all abilities — from high-achievers to those who need extra support — fostering a growth mindset and helping each student reach their full potential. As part of the exam invigilation team, I also support students during mock and GCSE exams, ensuring a calm, regulated testing environment.
