About Innocentia

I am Dr. Innocentia Velaphi Sibiya, an environmental scientist, educator, and mentor with a PhD in Applied Science (Environmental Management) and post-doctoral research experience with the University of Johannesburg and Tshwane University of Technology. Alongside my research career and leadership roles in international scientific organizations, I am deeply passionate about teaching and academic mentorship.

My interest in teaching comes from a long-standing commitment to empowering learners through knowledge. Throughout my academic career, I have designed and facilitated engaging learning experiences that encourage students to think independently, ask questions, and actively participate in problem-solving. I believe that education is most effective when students feel supported, capable, and intellectually curious.

Working with students — particularly in mathematics and chemistry — allows me to translate complex scientific thinking into clear, accessible understanding. Many learners struggle not because they lack ability, but because concepts have not been presented in a way that connects with them. My goal is to bridge that gap, helping students build confidence, analytical skills, and a genuine sense of competence in their subjects.

Mentorship has always been central to my professional path. Through teaching, consultations, and guidance, I aim to equip students not only for exams, but for long-term academic and career success. Seeing students grow in confidence, improve their performance, and realize their potential is what continually motivates my work as an educator.

About the lesson

My Approach to Private Tutoring

I offer personalised maths and chemistry lessons designed to build deep understanding, confidence, and strong exam performance. My teaching goes beyond memorising formulas — I help students understand why concepts work, so they can apply them independently in any question or context.

Methodology & What Makes My Lessons Unique
My methodology is based on three pillars: concept clarity, guided practice, and exam strategy. I break down complex ideas into simple, logical steps and connect them to real exam questions early on. Students don’t just watch me solve problems — they actively work through them with structured guidance until they gain confidence and independence.
What makes my lessons unique is the focus on thinking skills: pattern recognition in maths, and conceptual reasoning in chemistry. This helps students tackle unfamiliar or challenging questions with ease.

Language of Instruction
All lessons are taught in clear, fluent English, with explanations adapted to the student’s level of understanding.

What to Expect in a Typical Lesson
A typical session is structured but flexible to the student’s needs:
• Quick review of prior concepts or homework
• Clear explanation of a focused topic
• Step-by-step worked examples
• Student practice with guided support
• Exam-style questions and problem-solving strategies
