About Alex
Hello! I'm a passionate educator with a first-class degree in biochemistry from the University of Birmingham and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Manchester, specialising in biochemistry. My academic journey has taken me from the research laboratory to the classroom, and now to the world of scientific publishing where I work as a scientific editor. During my doctoral studies at Manchester, I had the privilege of teaching undergraduate chemistry students and supervising laboratory sessions, which sparked my genuine love for helping others understand the fascinating world of science. There's nothing quite like that moment when a complex concept suddenly clicks for a student – it's what drives my passion for teaching. In my current role as a scientific editor, I work daily with cutting-edge research from around the globe, translating complex scientific discoveries into clear, accessible language. This experience has not only kept me at the forefront of scientific developments but has also refined my ability to break down intricate concepts into understandable, digestible pieces. What sets me apart is my commitment to making chemistry and biology accessible and engaging. I believe that every student has the potential to excel in science when given the right support and encouragement. My approach is patient, supportive, and tailored to each individual's learning style. Now based in Cornwall, I'm excited to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with students both locally and online. My Teaching Approach As a PhD qualified biochemist with university teaching experience, I believe effective tutoring starts with understanding how each student learns best. My approach is highly personalised – I begin every new tutoring relationship by assessing your current knowledge, identifying areas of difficulty, and adapting my teaching style to match your learning preferences. Teaching Methodology My background as a scientific editor has taught me the importance of clear, step-by-step communication. I break down complex concepts into manageable chunks, using real-world examples to make abstract ideas concrete. For instance, when explaining enzyme kinetics, I might relate it to everyday scenarios like how traffic flow changes with road conditions. I encourage active participation through problem-solving exercises and interactive discussions, ensuring you're not just memorising but truly understanding the underlying principles. Lesson Structure I typically conduct 60-90 minute sessions, which allows sufficient time to review previous material, introduce new concepts, work through problems together, and set targeted practice. However, I'm flexible with timing based on student needs and can accommodate shorter sessions if preferred.
