About Theresa
Hello! My name is Theresa, and I am currently a PhD researcher in Population Health at the University of Auckland. My academic journey has been centered around understanding health, nutrition, and human physiology, and I have always been passionate about helping others understand these subjects as well.
I hold a BSc in Medical Physiology and an MSc in Nutrition with a major in Nutritional Epidemiology, and I am currently involved in both research and teaching at the university. As part of my academic work, I tutor undergraduate students in POPLHLTH 206, where I support students in understanding complex health concepts and applying them in a practical way.
My interest in tutoring comes from my experience both as a student and as a teacher. I know firsthand how challenging subjects like biology, physiology, and health science can feel, especially when concepts are not clearly explained. Over time, I realized that one of the things I enjoy most is helping students move from feeling confused or overwhelmed to suddenly understanding a concept and gaining confidence in their abilities.
I enjoy teaching because it allows me to share knowledge, support students in their academic journey, and help them develop confidence in science-related subjects.
Whether a student is preparing for exams, trying to improve their grades, or simply looking to understand their coursework better, I find it very rewarding to guide them through that process.
For me, tutoring is not just about improving marks—it is about helping students build confidence, develop curiosity, and realize that they are capable of understanding even the most difficult topics.

My lessons are designed to help students build a clear and confident understanding of biology and health science, rather than simply memorizing information. Many students struggle with these subjects because the concepts can feel complex or overwhelming. My approach is to break difficult topics down into simple, logical explanations and guide students step-by-step until the ideas make sense.
Each lesson is personalized to the student’s needs and goals. At the beginning, I usually assess what areas the student finds challenging and what they want to achieve—whether that is preparing for an upcoming exam, improving grades, or strengthening their understanding of key concepts. From there, we work through the material using explanations, diagrams, examples, and practice questions.
Because I work in academic research and university teaching, I also focus on helping students develop critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills, which are essential for success in biology and health sciences. I encourage students to ask questions, think through problems, and actively engage with the material rather than passively listening.
My goal in every lesson is not only to help students perform better in exams, but also to help them feel more confident and capable when approaching scientific subjects. I aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making progress at their own pace.
