About Toby
Hi, I'm Toby. I'm a second-year PhD student in Biochemistry at the University of Sussex, where my research focuses on arboviruses and vaccine development. Before starting my PhD, I completed an MSc in Medical Microbiology at the University of Manchester and a BSc in Microbiology at the University of Liverpool.
I've always loved explaining science in a way that actually makes sense, whether that's chatting with colleagues about research or helping curious friends understand tricky concepts. I want to bring that same enthusiasm to tutoring and help students not just get through exams, but genuinely enjoy and understand the subject along the way.

My approach is built around clarity and confidence. I break complex biology topics down into simple, memorable explanations, then work through exam-style questions together so you can apply what you've learnt under real exam conditions. Lessons typically run 60 minutes, adapted to your pace and goals.
I'm a PhD researcher in Biochemistry with an MSc in Medical Microbiology and a BSc in Microbiology, and I bring hands-on scientific experience alongside strong subject knowledge, particularly in microbiology, immunology, and virology. I tutor GCSE, A-Level, and university-level students, and I'm patient, encouraging, and happy to adjust my teaching style to whatever works best for you.
