About Ioan

After achieving a First Class Master in Chemistry at the University of Manchester, I have just completed a second master's degree at Imperial College London, from which I am advancing into PhD research. Despite my recent achievements, the route to success has not always been a straight road. Throughout my academic journey, I have learnt how to study efficiently and effectively, how to prioritise my time and, importantly, how to maximise marks. I am passionate about sharing what I have learnt through my experiences so that younger students don't make the same mistakes that I did - I am patient, empathetic and I want to help. About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is structured and methodical. During the first meeting with a tutee, I like to find out where the student stands on the different topics within the course. We will prioritise the more difficult areas, where I will provide explanations and allow ample time for questions in order to consolidate a deep understanding. Following that, I will provide problems which we will go through together. I am a huge advocate of making mistakes - this is how you learn! My job as the tutor is to guide the tutee towards the correct answer, as I believe that solving the problem yourself (perhaps with a nudge in the right direction) is invaluable in reinforcing learning. Both the teaching and the problems set are developed within the context of the exam board's specification. Appreciation of the intricacies of the specification is critical in order to maximise marks. The covering of previous exam questions will come later on (i.e. in the build-up to exams or after the student properly grasps a topic). These are much more useful when they can be answered in exam conditions and are wasted when notes are constantly being referred to. Following completion, we will go through the marking process together, identifying what the student did well and where they need to focus to ensure they can fulfil their potential when it comes to the real thing.

I loved having Ioan as a tutor in the 2nd and 3rd years of my undergraduate chemistry degree at the University of Manchester. He was able to explain difficult concepts that I was really struggling to understand, better than the lecturers!

He provided his own questions which we went through together so that I could work out my own errors, which I think really helped improve my problem solving long term. I never felt like any question I asked was stupid which is something I always struggled with in group environments. His knowledge of the subject really shone through and his enthusiasm rubbed off on me. I honestly couldn’t recommend a better tutor :)
