About John
Hi, I’m John Holmes MA, BA (hons), I live in Oxfordshire and I offer personal, online tuition of Philosophy, a subject dear to my heart. My degree was in Humanities with a philosophy specialism (mostly focusing on Philosophy of Mind) and I later went on to earn a Master's degree, for which I wrote my dissertation on Nietzsche’s ethics. I’ve always had a fascination with the subject and have enjoyed teaching and facilitating Philosophy workshops for children and young adults (P4C) over the years. I’m now very excited to be turning my attention to more tailored one-to-one tuition for A-level students.

I provide personalised tuition in an engaging and supportive learning environment for all my students. We each learn in different ways and at different paces so I very much tailor my sessions to each individual's needs, using a collaborative approach to setting goals and learning outcomes. Philosophy is, by its very nature, a fun and stimulating subject to engage with, so I like to leave plenty of space for discussion and the airing of personal views and opinions (so long as they are backed up with reasons!) as we move through the syllabus. I find this really helps to embed a vivid sense of what is at stake with philosophical questions, which can otherwise seem quite abstract and remote from practical concerns. In short, I aim to foster a sense of wonder (in both senses of that word) so as to feed the imagination, cultivate critical thinking skills and hopefully to pave the way for a lifelong interest in this fascinating subject.
