About Barbara Helen
I have been playing piano since I was seven years old. I am now 80 years old and still going strong. My instruction was in reading music and when I began songwriting, I realized that I didn't know chords, which meant I had to write everything out. So I went to the University of Maine at Augusta and studied songwriting withWillie Maiden, a former saxophonist with Stan Kenton. Whil e at UMA, I directed a series of songs ina musical theater format.The piece was
called, "Eve-olution: a musical odyssey."
For many years I wrote songs and perfomed them with a piano man. My son, Rhad, is a muscian, and he studied with my piano man abd learned play by listening, rather than reading music,which I had found to be constricting. He has written the musicfora theatre production called "Misconception" about people who couldn't get pregnant.

Teach scales and use Scarlatti etc. music books;
Lessons for people who want towrite songs:
Basic knowledge of keys and scalesis first order of business.
Beginning with C scale, we will progress though the major and minor scales. Once the scales are learned and the chord symbols,then songwriting can begin.
