About Karen

I currently teach advanced chemistry at a small liberal arts college, where I have earned two division honors for outstanding teaching. My experience has covered many different scientific disciplines as both a professor and a researcher. I am adaptable as an educator and passionate about learning new things and helping others understand complex subjects. My main interests include analytical, environmental, and organic synthesis. All of these require a solid understanding of general chemistry principles. I credit my ability to adapt and learn new material to the strong foundation I developed during my undergrad years. As a student I was blessed to have outstanding professors and mentors along the way. I strive to pay it forward by assisting the next generation of chemical professionals on their journey .

About the lesson

My approach when I tutor new chemistry students is to find the problem spots and work at rebuilding any cracks in foundational knowledge. Once we lay down a solid base, it is easy to build on more complex concepts. Chemistry cannot be memorized, it must be navigated using critical reasoning skills. This requires a solid understanding of chemical behavior and concepts. My students value my ability to break difficult subject matter down into easier to understand processes by using analogies and examples. I am very patient and will approach a subject in several different directions until one makes sense to the student. While most of my students have been undergraduates in college, I have worked with high school and graduate college students, depending on the subject. My motto is "think like a chemist."
