About Ruth

I am a qualified, practising secondary English teacher with a genuine passion for helping young people become confident and successful learners. I also hold a Master’s degree in Classical Studies, which has strengthened my academic background in literature, language, history and critical analysis.

Before becoming an English teacher, I worked in pastoral leadership and have extensive experience supporting young people in a variety of settings. This includes working in vocational-based educational settings with disabled young people, as well as experience within care home settings. These roles have given me a strong understanding of how individual needs, confidence and life experiences can affect learning.

I currently teach English across KS3 and GCSE and work with students across the full ability range. This includes students requiring additional SEND or EAL support, students who lack confidence or have experienced barriers to learning, and highly able students who benefit from greater academic challenge and stretch.

I am patient, approachable and encouraging, while maintaining high expectations. I believe that getting to know the individual student, understanding how they learn and building a positive relationship are essential to helping them make genuine progress.

As a current classroom teacher, my knowledge of the curriculum and GCSE requirements is up to date. Ultimately, I want students to leave my lessons not only with stronger English skills and improved exam technique, but also with greater confidence, independence and belief in what they can achieve.

About the lesson

As a qualified and practising secondary English teacher, I provide supportive, engaging and personalised English tuition tailored to each student's individual needs and goals.

My lessons are typically 60 minutes and are suitable for KS3 and GCSE students. I support students with reading, writing, analysis, essay structure, exam technique and building confidence.

I am experienced with different GCSE exam boards and currently teach AQA English Language and Literature and Eduqas English Language. This means I can tailor lessons to the specific exam board, question types and assessment objectives a student is working towards.

I believe effective tutoring begins with understanding the individual student. I adapt my teaching to different abilities and learning needs, breaking challenging concepts into manageable steps through clear modelling, guided practice and targeted feedback.

Alongside my classroom teaching experience, I have a strong pastoral background and extensive experience supporting students with SEND and EAL. Equally, I am confident stretching high-attaining and gifted students, helping them develop more sophisticated analysis, perceptive interpretations, ambitious vocabulary and the depth of response needed to access the highest GCSE grades.

Whether a student is struggling with confidence, aiming to secure a pass, or working towards Grades 7–9, lessons are pitched at the right level while maintaining high expectations.

Most importantly, I aim to create a calm and positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing the confidence and skills to work increasingly independently.

Details

£35 per hour — KS3 English
Personalised support with reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary and analytical skills. Ideal for building confidence or providing additional academic challenge.

£40 per hour — GCSE English Language or Literature
Focused tuition tailored to the student’s exam board, individual targets and areas for development.

£40–£50 per hour — Year 11 & Specialist Tuition
Intensive GCSE exam preparation, combined Language and Literature support, targeted Grade 7–9 development, or specialist SEND/EAL tuition. The exact rate will depend on the level and type of support required.

Bundle & Family Packages Available -
I am happy to discuss reduced rates for families who would like to book a block of regular lessons in advance. Discounts are also available for siblings from the same household who require tuition.

Everything provided -
I will provide all resources and equipment needed for each lesson, including personalised worksheets, revision materials, practice questions and any additional learning resources. There is no expectation for families to purchase additional materials.

Online Tuition -
Online lessons are also available and will be offered at an appropriately discounted rate, reflecting the reduced travel and associated costs.

My aim is to keep arrangements flexible, so I am always happy to discuss the most suitable package based on the student's needs, frequency of lessons and whether tuition is face-to-face or online.
