About Matt

My name is Matt and I live in a sunny seaside town in Norfolk. I have a young family, equipped with a lovely pooch called Arthur, and a Canary called Ken. When I'm not busy, I enjoy spending time with my family, going on walks no matter the weather, enjoying what's around me where I live, and visiting friends and family. When I'm not doing any of those, I love to read, spend time editing photos and drawing digital images for other people. When I was young I was always encouraged to do well, and I'm lucky that I had that - I had a drive to succeed. However, growing up I never knew what I wanted to do as a job, so I found it difficult to identify a direct career path. After leaving school and college, I went to work in the local supermarket, and from there I went to work at the region's ambulance service answering 999 calls. From there I went and worked as Cabin crew for a few years, until I finally found my niche in a newly opened local school. My wife was so happy when I was successful in this role as she'd previously joked (many years ago) that I should be a teacher. Looking back now I could not agree more. In this school I started as a Teaching Assistant (TA), getting promoted within a few weeks to a Cover Supervisor (this role enabled me to teach pre-planned lessons in the event of a teacher's absence). I gained a vast amount of experience in this role as I quickly learned of the wide variety of abilities within the learning environment. I also realised that school and textbooks aren't for everyone, so naturally, I thought on my feet and adapted the lessons set for me to teach, enabling the students to learn in a manner that suited them. From this role I was then promoted again to a HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant). At this stage I was able to teach specific subjects ranging from Art, Food technology and Resistant Materials, planning and delivering the lessons myself. Strangely, you'll probably know that none of these subjects are related to my passion (which is biology), but they have given me further insight into teaching students of varying abilities. In addition to teaching these lessons, I also study myself as an OU and Open Study College student. I have also completed courses in children and young people's mental health, and supporting teaching and learning, and aside from my typical duties at work, I also contribute to staff well-being (including counselling) so am also great at motivating and listening when it's needed! And that's basically my story so far! Please contact me for further information!

First and foremost I love science, and I love teaching science. My favourite science is biology and anything to do with biology gets my attention. I'm an avid planner so am well equipped to plan, teach and provide feedback to all my students. My lessons are typically an hour long, though other length lessons are available to meet your requirements. In terms of my qualifications, I currently hold: Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) (Open) with The Open University (OU) 3 A levels (Biology, Psychology & General Studies) 3 A/S levels (Chemistry, History & Health and Social Care) 11 GCSEs (including Maths, English, Double science & IT) Level 2 in Understanding Children and Young People's Mental Health Additionally, I am currently studying two further courses which include: Level 3 award in Supporting Teaching and Learning BSc (Open), with the OU. Please note an 'Open degree' is a fully endorsed Bachelors with Honours degree, comprising of a variety of subjects from across the OU. In particular, my focus to this stage has primarily consisted of biology and psychology modules, though I've also had experience with other sciences and critical evaluations of module research. I'm happy to tutor any student up to the age of school leaving age. As I currently work in an SEMH school, students who struggle with mainstream academia are advised to get in contact to see how I can help! Additionally, if you're an adult seeking a biology tutor, then I can help! My webcam door is always open for anyone willing to get some help and before you ask; no I never judge anyone on their abilities, their situation or their demographics!
