About Steve
I have always loved teaching. My credentials in English, psychology, and biomechanics are only the beginning of how I approach learning. In building beginners into Olympic-level swimmers—including working with ten Olympians preparing for the Paris Games and coaching the only Californian to make the Olympic team (by .02 in the mile) —I learned how learning, feedback and testing, and mastery truly works. Teaching at the highest levels of sport sharpened my ability to teach English, grammar, motivation, discipline, and problem-solving, because excellence follows the same principles in every field. My students have gone on to masters and doctorates, and lives of faith and purpose. In the Fullerton School District, I designed a Learn-to-Learn program that demonstrated to students and teachers alike that learning must be built around the individual. Students learned how to teach themselves, how to master material efficiently, and how to succeed within the school grading system—whether or not every subject naturally inspired them. In the Orange Unified School District, I created a fully student-centered curriculum. I deconstructed the entire California state curriculum into its core components and linked each one to targeted lessons students could complete independently. This allowed students not only to repair weaknesses, but to move far ahead in areas where they showed talent and genuine passion. Later, through Talent Code Academy, I refined these methods to help students become true learning heroes. The goal is not conformity, but mastery—helping the next innovators, creators, and leaders surround themselves with the right people, resources, and challenges. True mastery in one domain almost always lifts performance in every other area. It takes a village to help a child become a fully realized learner and to live the life they are meant for. Throughout history—from Leonardo da Vinci to modern physicians, tradespeople, and innovators—mentorship has been essential. I provide that mentorship: grounded in proven principles, informed by experience at the highest levels, and applied through modern, innovative methods that prepare students not just to succeed in school, but to thrive in life. At sixteen, I began teaching swimming and quickly discovered a passion—and a talent—for helping people do what they once thought was impossible, while enjoying the process. That passion led me to coach swimmers from age five through NCAA athletes and Olympians, and to earn teaching credentials in English, psychology, and biomechanics, teaching successfully in the Fullerton and Orange Unified School Districts. Over the past twenty years, I founded Talent Code Academy, initially for my own children and later for families seeking more than mass schooling can provide. Our results speak for themselves: two students graduated from college at age sixteen, and many others have moved from academic struggle to true mastery across a wide range of subjects. My approach is different because it is measured, individualized, and adaptive. I assess how each student learns best—visually, audibly, tactically, or kinesthetically—and build a curriculum around your child, not a generic template. I continuously measure progress and adjust strategies so learning is efficient, engaging, and effective. In one-on-one instruction, your child is the only priority. Though I bring fifty years of experience, my methods are thoroughly modern. I am fluent in AI-based tools and use them not as shortcuts, but as powerful systems for feedback, creativity, and mastery. Students learn how to use these tools wisely, just as they learn any other skill. Yes, our students perform well on tests—but more importantly, they develop confidence, independence, and excellence in the areas where they have the greatest talent and passion. I am a coach of coaches and the creator of student-centered learning software. If you work with me, you are not just hiring a tutor—you are partnering with someone who has designed a better way to learn, grow, and prepare for a meaningful, successful life.

The first thing we do is set goals. Why are you here? What is your favorite subject—not just in school, but in life? What do you do best? In other words, we begin by getting to know one another. I assess the student as a whole person, not just a set of grades or test scores. Next, we examine all available clues about where the student is right now. This includes test results, teacher feedback, and prior work, as well as environmental factors: class size, teaching style, the teacher’s expertise in the subjects the student wants to improve, and exposure to people who have already mastered those areas. I also look at family background and experiences that may help a student make sense of what they are learning, struggling with, or excelling at. Just as important, I want to know what the student has already done independently to improve. From there, we build a highly personalized curriculum that is engaging, relevant, and practical. Student-centered is not a slogan—it’s a method. We identify the learning modality in which your child is most effective, and only then select the curriculum and tools that will lead to real proficiency. Finally, we connect learning to the real world. We identify people working at the highest levels across more than 2,000 disciplines—the “ologies”—so students can clearly see the relevance of algebra, creative writing, science, or even performing well under test pressure. When learning is meaningful, progress accelerates and confidence follows. It's not luck or chance my students have excelled at school and life. :)
