About Thomas Strong (Muzonic)

I am a Principal Tenor with Opera Australia, with formal training from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Bachelor of Performing Arts) and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (Master of Music in Opera).

Throughout my career I have received major national awards and scholarships, including the Lady Fairfax New York Opera Scholarship, the Dame Joan Sutherland / AOAC Award, and the John Bequest Award for Singers.

I have performed as a soloist at leading venues including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Concert Hall, Hammer Hall and Melbourne Arts Centre.

I perform in German, French, Italian and English, and bring that linguistic and stylistic understanding into my teaching, helping students sing with clarity, authenticity and strong technical foundations.

About the lesson

I specialize in teaching Italian singing technique similar to that used by the great opera singers, and by many high-level mainstream artists. My focus spans Classical singing, Musical Theatre, Rock, Jazz, Pop and traditional crooning.

My teaching prioritises vocal health and longevity. We work on proper breath support, efficient projection, and discovering your true voice — not manipulating it to imitate someone else. We are all individuals. The only person with your voice is you. I guide students away from forcing or shaping their sound to copy others and instead help them develop a strong, authentic, individual voice.

I will help you build a genuine connection to the music and communicate it with both emotion and technical skill.

Lessons typically run for 60 minutes, with a maximum of 90 minutes to avoid vocal strain. For children under 10, I offer 30-minute lessons tailored to their age and developmental stage.

Initial lessons involve a detailed assessment of your voice, strengths and goals. You may bring your own repertoire, or I can select material suited specifically to your voice. Backing tracks can also be used to evaluate coordination and musical interpretation.

With 16 years of teaching experience, and a background as a Principal Artist with Opera Australia, holding both a Bachelor and Master degree in Opera and classical music, I bring a high level of expertise and practical performance insight to every lesson.

I welcome students of all levels from complete beginners to advanced professionals and also offer online lessons.

I additionally provide instruction in drama, stagecraft and stage combat for performers who wish to develop complete stage confidence.

He showed me how to hit the high notes without constantly straining my voice. I could never hit a C before I saw Tom and now I have just started singing an aria with a C in it and I hit it every time.
