I’m not like those impatient, nit-picky, frustrating teachers that are unfortunately out there in some places. With my students, I’m encouraging and patient. I also don’t correct students, and instead repeat back the correct way to express what they want to express. I take the time to get to know each one, because not everyone has the same situation. You’re coming here and looking around into this most likely because of one of two reasons: 1) You’re a foreign language learning enthusiast who’s ready now to take English by the horns. Or 2) Your English abilities, or the lack thereof… maybe just haven’t been enough for what you need it for. Whether that be work or in your personal life… it’s very likely that it’s affected you, to the point where you just… couldn't be… you. I’m not even sure if I can help you yet, but if you resonate with one of these reasons, then maybe consider the possibility that I can. Are you going to be the person that keeps pushing this down the road? Then those work opportunities, that business you wanted to start, and those friends you wanted to connect with just can’t possibly come to fruition. Or… is it maybe time to make a change? I am a native English speaker, who’s taught English to groups and individuals in private sessions, for over 2 years. The teaching method I adhere to is called “comprehensible input,” popularized by Stephen Krashen. This is what more and more teachers and universities are switching to. Krashen describes the comprehensible input theory simply as more natural and simple approach, essentially identical to the way we pick up our first language as children.
Like Krashen, I also don’t believe that we should learn languages by immediately learning advanced grammar principles or by forced speaking practice, rather language should start flowing naturally after the teacher (or “language parent”) has given enough input, in a comprehensible way, that allows the student to acquire the language. Grammar. rules, nonetheless, always eventually fall apart somewhere. That’s why there are “exceptions to the rule.” So why bother teaching it in the beginning as an essential step?
If you’ve ever thought the traditional method of language learning, that you learned years ago in high school, didn’t help you to actually learn the language…. you’re probably right… it likely didn’t….. at least not for creating smooth, colloquial, and flowing communication that you don’t just remember for a month or two, but that you have now stored in your long-term memory because you didn’t just learn a language….. you acquired it.
In summary, if you’re not 100% completely satisfied with your teacher, your learning method, your speaking ability, and more…. then something’s probably wrong, and….
