About Michael
My background is in statistics and finance. I studied both at Carnegie Mellon University. I spent a few years doing quantitative trading on Wall Street before transitioning to the tech world. I've been a data scientist at multiple start-ups and am heading product management and data at a startup in NYC.
I love to teach and want to refine that skill set with this platform. I aim to teach high school math someday and volunteer with a few education charities.

I've been writing SQL (Postgres, MySQL, etc.) in many dialects for 15 years. Before that, I studied statistics and learned other coding languages like R, Python, and Java.
I've taught about 50 people SQL throughout my career. 5 of whom went on to convert and become full-time data analysts from their current job.
My approach to teaching SQL is to break it down in terms of how we think vs computers think. Queries are not written in the same order as our brain's logic, so learning how to gather data, explore it, and then query it seems very out of order relative to how a computer thinks. SQL's required order is similar to writing an essay as supporting paragraphs first, then an introduction then the conclusion. We can untie that together in lessons to help build complex queries and subqueries.
This can help with total beginners who don't know how to code yet or early career folks looking to uplevel.
