About Joel
As a writing professional, a not-insignificant portion of my duties have included proofreading, editing, and improving written copy from coworkers and superiors. I have collaborated with and mentored fellow professionals to improve written copy, and believe that the experience and lessons I bring from the professional world will firmly translate to improving the work at the academic level.

I believe in teaching with an eye toward purpose, practicality, and effect. This means that I believe that writing students can improve their work when they better understand Why they need to write, for Whom, and for What purpose.
To that end, I believe it helps for me to get a baseline view of students' current and past work, to better understand where they most need improvement. This let me best develop a lesson plan catered to their needs.
What sets me apart is that I am not a standard educator. I have a degree in Communication from Rutgers University, specialized in business and marketing communications. I spent 15+ years working professionally as a Technical Writer and Marketing Copywriter, and have written for a broad range of purposes, audiences, and media - including webpages, social media, advertisements, video scripts, podcasts, brochures, training guides, product manuals, and more. I have significant experience writing and presenting training seminars for business writing.
As such, my experience would work best for students of high school level or above who are seeking improvement in writing and general English (e.g., grammar, comprehension, structure, etc.).
