About Joel
I’m an award-winning journalist with more than 25 years of professional experience and over a decade of teaching at the university and community college level. I’ve worked in real newsrooms, edited under deadline, and helped students navigate the same challenges they face in class—research, writing clearly, and making sense of complex information.
As a tutor, I’m professional, prepared, and genuinely invested in my students’ success. I create a supportive, low-pressure environment where questions are encouraged and learning feels engaging rather than intimidating. Students can expect clear communication, practical guidance, and honest, constructive feedback. My goal is not just to help students improve an assignment, but to build confidence, curiosity, and skills they can carry forward long after our sessions end.

My approach as a tutor is practical, student-centered, and rooted in real-world experience. As a professional journalist and longtime university and community college instructor, I tailor lessons to each student’s goals and learning style. I connect every topic to contemporary events so the material feels alive and relevant, and I emphasize critical thinking, source evaluation, and ethical research practices.
I try to make learning engaging and fun by using visual and interactive techniques—annotating real articles, mapping arguments, breaking down news coverage, and workshopping writing in real time. A typical lesson includes skill-building, applied exercises, and targeted feedback modeled on professional editorial standards. What sets me apart is my focus on building independent thinkers and confident writers who can analyze information, synthesize sources, and communicate clearly long after our sessions end. My lessons are for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in journalism, political science, and history, especially those who want practical skills and deeper analytical frameworks.
