About Taryn
I am an experienced chess tutor with 25 years of teaching students at all levels, from beginners to advanced players. Over the years, I have successfully guided over 200 students, helping them develop a deep understanding of chess strategy, tactics, and game thinking. My teaching philosophy is simple: learning chess should be structured, enjoyable, and focused on building both skill and confidence.
I emphasize understanding the fundamentals, including piece movements, openings, tactics, and endgames, while gradually introducing advanced strategies like positional play, pawn structures, sacrifices, and complex combinations. I also focus on critical thinking, visualization, pattern recognition, and decision-making to help students think ahead and plan effectively.
Every lesson is tailored to the student’s learning style. I combine compassion, patience, and clear communication to create a supportive learning environment. I adapt my methods to suit each student’s pace, ensuring they fully grasp concepts before moving on. Practical game practice, analysis of famous games, and tournament preparation are key parts of my lessons.
Notable achievements include helping students win local and regional chess tournaments, improve ratings significantly, and develop a lifelong passion for the game. I believe chess is more than a game—it teaches focus, strategy, patience, and problem-solving.
My goal as a tutor is to guide students step by step, nurture their skills, and make learning chess a fun and rewarding experience. I take pride in seeing students grow, gain confidence, and achieve success over the board.

I emphasize the fundamentals of chess, including piece movement, opening principles, tactics, and endgame strategies, before gradually introducing advanced concepts like positional play, pawn structures, sacrifices, and complex combinations.
I incorporate critical thinking exercises, pattern recognition, calculation skills, and visualization techniques to strengthen decision-making and foresight. Students also learn chess notation, strategy planning, time management, and analysis of classical and contemporary games to understand strategic ideas and historical context. I include practical game preparation, helping students analyze opponents, explore openings, and develop personalized plans for tournaments and friendly matches.
My tutoring style is compassionate and empathetic. I encourage questions, provide constructive feedback, and celebrate progress at every stage. Flexibility is key—I adjust lessons dynamically to match the student’s pace, ensuring concepts are fully understood before moving forward. I communicate clearly, breaking down complex ideas into simple steps, and provide exercises that balance challenge with achievable goals.
I guide learners from beginner to advanced levels, including aspiring competitive players. Lessons focus on both technical skill and mental discipline, fostering patience, focus, and confidence.
