About Nicola

Hello! My name is Nicola and I am a professional singer with 20+ years performance experience. I am a complete voice nerd and love keeping up to date with science backed awareness and safe practices to keep you and your wonderful voice safe and well, whether that’s to be more confident belting out your Whitney in the shower or you are a professional performer wanting to polish your technique and get a helping hand to maintain vocal stamina or make the most of your range. I have a degree in popular music performance if that’s important to you (whilst accolades aren’t the be all n end all and certainly do not define a great teacher… it’s good to know sometimes that there is education and ongoing learning occurring) where I learnt and practised all contemporary genres and specialised in hard rock n metal, alongside teaching and performance psychology in my final year. I have since performed all over the world as a function singer in my own right right or backing vocalist for original artists, including Glastonbury and Prague Castle and more recently an impromptu performance in Bali ha. As someone who struggled with performance anxiety at a young age I can deeply empathise with how crippling this can feel for anyone. I am AuDHD and now LOVE auditions because I have a better understanding of myself, what I need and how best to prepare for ME and the environment I’m going into. Very passionate about helping you with this too, every one is different and whilst there are certain commonalities in prep, there’s no one size fits all so let’s explore together n see what’s going on for you?! I have two small performing children myself with additional needs and adore working with children…. it’s not just a tickbox for me, children are ace and I often learn as much from them as I do adult mentors at times. I am DBS checked and more than happy for parents to sit in with younger children if helpful or preferred. Essentially I’m an experienced and passionate professional with the time and flexibility to teach again and I would love to help you! I’ve been fortunate to have some incredible teachers in my career who are kind, patient, experts and mentors and I would love to share and support you with everything I have and will continue to learn! I can teach from my lovely little cottage in Rufforth or travel to you if you live within York, wherever you will be most comfortable.

About the lesson

My lessons will be fun and engaging, tailored to you and your needs. We will look at the foundations of great technique rooted in posture, support and airflow… without these consistently you are asking for trouble….. though there’s always the extreme exception to the rule! We can explore vocal health and how to maintain your voice professionally. Once we have some solid ground here we can look at laying in all the fabulous components that make a performance unforgettable, YOU and most importantly fun and sustainable! Lessons will be fun AND challenging, we’ll have a good giggle, make some silly noises n sing some songs n meanwhile you’ll hopefully be blissfully unaware of how much you are learning in the process. Whilst the discipline of singing well and safely requires ongoing practice and care, the act of singing itself should be fun.. freeing and with ease. Effort should come in the practice of correct support technique and natural airflow and not harsh pressure from within your voice box and neck. Appropriate and relevant muscle tension… the more relaxed you are in your head neck jaw and diaphragm the happier n freer n healthier your voice will feel….. I promise. We’ll work together to get you out of your head n into your body. I cover all contemporary genres and musical theatre, I can help with technique such as mastering safe belting smartly and efficiently(it’s far easier than you think once you have the right foundation) preparing for auditions or similarly if you just want to have a go n build some confidence…. I’m here for it and happy to help! Any questions ask away!

Perfect! I had a very interesting first lesson with Nicola. She was excellent at making me feel comfortable and relaxed whilst we went through warm up exercises and techniques to practice before an attempt at singing. Looking forward to my journey with her.
