About Shantel

My own education gives me a strong foundation to teach from. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with an English minor, and I've taken advanced-level English classes since middle school. Beyond that, I've completed specialized coursework in:

Rhetoric: Theory and Practice — how language persuades, structures arguments, and communicates effectively
College Grammar — a deep, technical command of how sentences work
Linguistics — how language is acquired, structured, and processed
I'm also comfortable with classic literature — from Beowulf onward — so I can help students appreciate both timeless texts and the language that shapes them. That combination of psychology (understanding how kids learn) and English expertise (knowing the material deeply and teaching it well) is what makes my tutoring effective.

When I'm not teaching, I love to read—and I'll be honest: about 99% of my personal reading is romance novels. I believe loving what you read is the first step to reading well, and I bring that same love of stories into every lesson.

About the lesson

Hi, I'm Shantel! I bring a psychology background to tutoring, which means I don't just teach content — I understand how people learn. I'm patient, encouraging, and skilled at figuring out where a student is getting stuck and why. My English minor and advanced-level English training since middle school mean I bring strong writing, reading, and analytical skills to every subject I teach. I focus on building confidence and independent thinking, not just short-term grades.

My lessons are designed for elementary and middle school students (roughly grades K–8). I help with reading, writing, English, spelling, vocabulary, and general study skills, as well as homework help and building strong academic habits. I'm especially well-suited for students who need extra support, want to get ahead, or just need a patient, encouraging guide to help them fall in love with learning.

I adapt to each student's learning style. Some kids need to see things written out, others need to hear it explained, and many need to talk it through or move around. My toolkit includes:
