About Shadow
It’s tempting for a professional to overwhelm a student with what they "think" the student should learn. How many times have you heard, “Just do this!” where the "this" isn't at all clear and there's no explanation of "why" you should do it.
The key to learning is to work with someone patient enough to listen to what you need and then guide you through the steps so you can do it yourself. Writing is like riding a bike: explaining how it's done doesn't necessarily translate to mastering the skill to do it. Students need to learn to spot and solve problems on their own by practice. A good trainer makes suggestions for improvement and explains the reasoning behind those suggestions. Otherwise, it's not teaching. It's just line editing.
I'm happiest when I can help a student achieve their maximum potential. As a trainer, my job is to make myself obsolete. If you work with me, I’ll be patient and helpful for as long as you want or need. But always know my goal is to get you to the point where you can stop being my student and start being my colleague.

The challenge of becoming an effective writer is not just to generate content. A brilliant story or essay can be lackluster due to overwriting, poor proofreading, and a failure to engage the reader. Becoming an effective writer means learning to let go of your ego and make the tough decision to do what the work needs, even if that means sacrificing text that you adore.

The challenge of becoming an effective writer is to become an effective reader and editor. Learn to understand what the work needs to really shine, and how to deliver it to your audience. Master using polished, efficient and engaging text that appeals, not just to the writer, but to the reader.

My job is to listen carefully to your goals and then help you achieve them. I couldn't suggest a lesson plan because that would be specific to the student. What I can promise is not to waste your time by telling you things you already know. I have almost 30 years as a technical trainer. That means I have perfected the art of listening to students, using active listening to confirm what they want from me, and delivering the help they need to succeed using simple vocabulary/analogies tailored to their level of expertise.

Details
I think virtual lessons are optimal because we can both look at the text together. If you book a lesson and have a particular piece you're struggling with, I will ask you to send the piece in advance so we can spend the time learning.
I'm not opposed to in person lessons. However, it seems disrespectful of your time to require you to commute to a location when we can work virtually just as efficiently.
