About Heather

I have a Combined Honours Degree from Glasgow University, UK, in English Literature and History of Art; I have a PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education) from Sussex University, UK, in Secondary School English Teaching. I first began teaching ESOL in 1981. I was a state school teacher from 1992 - 2009. I taught in Spain in private institutions from 2009 - 2011. I am now semi-retired and I work as a tutor, an online ESOL teacher and exam marker.

About the lesson

I tailor my teaching to the individual's needs, strengths, weaknesses and enthusiasms. I use humour as a means of engaging students. I believe in varying the types of tasks and activities used in lessons. I place emphasis on reinforcing/revising by re-presenting what has been learnt in various ways. I also find that general knowledge, current affairs and leisure pursuits all serve as ways of delivering the many practical nuts and bolts of language learning. Where oral proficiency is concerned, I minimise Teacher Talking Time and maximise Student Talking Time.

Perfect! Hi, Heather, thank you for your encouraging words. Beauty was very happy with the first lesson, and is looking forward to the next.

Heather's response
Beauty speaks and understands more English than she gives herself credit for! Her command of a range of grammar structures and turns of phrase is impressive. My aim is to build her confidence in preparation for the exam.
