About Hugo

Hi, I'm Hugo. I hold a First-Class honors degree in French with a Distinction in spoken French, and I studied at a translation school in Paris. But the thing I'm proudest of is that I learned to perform stand-up comedy in French.

For five years I lived in France and built a career on stage in my second language, becoming a resident performer at a comedy club in Nice and playing shows across the country. Making a French-speaking audience laugh, live, with no script to hide behind, is about the hardest test of a language there is, and it taught me how the language really works: its rhythm, its humor, the natural way people actually speak.

That's exactly what I bring to my lessons. I've done the hard part of learning French as an adult, so I understand the effort involved and how good it feels when it finally clicks. I'm patient, reliable, and genuinely invested in your progress, and I'll make sure you feel relaxed and encouraged from the very first session.

Whatever your level or goal, you'll find our lessons friendly, professional, and a lot more fun than you might expect.

About the lesson

Hi, I'm Hugo: a fluent French speaker with a First-Class honors degree in French and a Distinction in spoken French, who also studied at a translation school in Paris. I learned French as an adult, to a high level, which means I teach it the way it's actually learned, not the way it's presented in textbooks.

My approach is conversation-led and built around your goals. Because I've walked the same path you're on, I know which bits are genuinely tricky and how to explain them clearly, and I can spot the mistakes English speakers tend to make before you make them.

A typical lesson starts with a relaxed warm-up chat to get you speaking, moves into the day's focus, a real-life situation, a grammar point that's been tripping you up, pronunciation, or exam practice, and ends with feedback and a small, manageable goal for next time. I keep track of your progress so each lesson builds on the last.

What sets me apart? I spent five years as a stand-up comedian in France, so I know how to keep lessons engaging and how to make a nervous beginner feel at ease. You learn far faster when you're relaxed, laughing, and not afraid to get things wrong.

My lessons suit all levels, from complete beginners to intermediate speakers wanting to build fluency and confidence, and cover everyday conversation, grammar, pronunciation, and exam preparation such as DELF or TEF. Whether you're learning for work, travel, or life in a bilingual country, we'll go at your pace. À bientôt!
