Looking for some help in preparing for a French or Spanish GCSE? Seeking conversation practice or aid with literature at A level? Or, perhaps you'd just like to improve your communicative skills with a view to visiting France or Spain? Look no further!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
French (KS3, GCSE and A level)
Spanish (KS3, GCSE and A level)
English (EFL, Cambridge English and IELTS)
- What techniques do you employ in your teaching?
Firstly, it's important for me to establish exactly what you are looking to achieve through our lessons. If you are working towards a qualification such as a GCSE or A level, I tend to employ a blended approach of the four skills, beginning with the receptive skills (reading and listening) and progressing into the productive (speaking and writing). I have a large repertoire of engaging exercises and activities that I use to facilitate practice of these skills, identifying key vocabulary throughout according to the themes of the exam specification.
I adopt a similarly strategic approach when teaching grammar (i.e. verb tenses). Having identified it in a natural context, I elicit its meaning and usage, teach its formation and finally task my students with reproducing it. This sequential methodology has produced excellent results and retention of grammatical knowledge amongst my students.
I am also a strong proponent of retrieval practice (revisiting prior learning) and incorporate it into all of my lessons. In my opinion, the best way to start a lesson is to begin with an activity that draws upon what we learnt last time. Not only does this encourage long-term memorisation of content, but it also builds a learner's confidence.
