About Marjory

Tutor specialising in A Level English Language and English Literature.
As a recently retired teacher, I bring experience and variety career to my tutoring. Students tutored by me can be reassured that I have up to date experience of exam syllabuses and a very wide knowledge of my subject.
For me, English is about life, both in Language study and Literature. I encourage my students to find links in their reading and writing to their own lives, as well as exploring other worlds. These worlds can be found equally in the literary canon, the spoken language transcripts of politicians, students’ creative writing.
I understand the pressures of studying, both in normal circumstances and during these more uncertain times. During my teaching career, I continued to seek higher qualifications in order to ensure that my knowledge of my subject is of the highest standard. I have a doctorate in Education from the University of Sussex where my thesis explored the pedagogy of writing in A Level English Language students. I have an MSc in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh which ensures that my knowledge for teaching English Language is very extensive. In addition, I have a PGCE in Secondary English after taking my Master of Arts from the University of Aberdeen. I also have an RSA TEFL qualification. I have taught in state and private schools here and abroad. As well as students aged 11 – 18, I have taught adults in Further Education both in college and in the prison education system.
My tutoring approach matches the student’s individual needs. I tailor my material to the learning style of the student. I enjoy the opportunities that comes with one to one tutoring, be it exploring key speeches in Shakespeare from the context of Elizabethan theatre, Seamus Heaney’s superb use of the sonnet form, gender theory in an English Language exam transcript.

Her knowledge of the literary canon is immense. She also is an excellent at collecting and helping students to analyse texts for English Language. Marjory teaches lower down in the school too to great effect. She had an excellent relationship with students as Head of Year. She supervised them both pastorally and academically.
