About Robert

I'm Robert, and I want you to be able to describe how a piece fits together. If you show me a difficult page, we will not assume that the answer is simply to practice it from the beginning more often. I may ask where something returns, where the hand changes position or which note helps you recognize the next chord. We can make a short route through the page before working on its detail. That gives a beginner a place to start and an experienced pianist a way to organize a more demanding reading task.

I like explanations that you can check at the instrument. Rather than asking you to memorize a rule about a chord, I can show you its shape, move one note and let you hear what changed. If the visual explanation does not help, we can build the idea from the sound or the distance between your hands. You should also be able to say that the plan makes sense but feels too busy while you are playing. Then we can reduce the task to one useful observation and keep the rest for later.

The lesson's pace will leave room for your questions and musical preferences. A child may want to find a familiar tune inside a few keyboard shapes; a teenager may be curious about how an accompaniment supports a melody. Adult beginners and returning players can revisit foundations without turning the lesson into a test of what they remember. Advanced students can bring their own analysis and fingering ideas for us to examine practically. I want you to leave with a clearer picture of the piece and a practice plan you can follow without needing someone beside you to supply every next note.

When every printed note feels like a separate puzzle, reading a piano piece can take all your attention before you hear its shape. We will look for useful groups. In a short passage, you might locate the lowest note, notice which notes move by a step and find a chord shape that returns. We can play that shape as a quiet block before restoring the rhythm written on the page. This helps the eye recognize a relationship and gives the hand a destination. A new pianist can begin with two or three notes; you do not need to know a collection of chord names before making this useful.

For music that moves around the keyboard, we will practise finding the next position before trying to play the complete passage. You might move silently from one small shape to another, check the outer notes, then add the music between them. If a jump keeps missing, we can decide when the hand is free to move and which note gives the clearest landing point. A returning or intermediate player can use this to organize an accompaniment that previously felt like a long string of instructions. An advanced pianist can apply more detailed planning to changes of register, inversions or textures where several voices compete for the hand's attention.

Once the route is familiar, we will bring back the details that make it a piece: rhythm, articulation, phrasing and the relationship between the hands. We might keep only the important harmonic arrivals while you play the melody, then restore the accompanying pattern a little at a time. Children can recognize returning shapes through short musical games; teenagers can investigate the structure of a chosen theme; adults can connect notation with patterns they can actually feel at the keyboard. Practice will include reading ahead to a specific landmark and then playing through it. The aim is to make the score more understandable, so you can spend less attention decoding and more attention making music.
