About Analisa

As a grandchild of Salvadoran immigrants, the motivation to pursue a "good education" was instilled in me from a very young age. However, I have learned that pursuing a "good education" looks different for everyone.

I have been on both sides of the table when it comes to academic success; through I excelled as the valedictorian of my high school, I found that lack of preparation for STEM college courses at UC Berkeley impeded my academic success. After feeling dejected and overwhelmed by chemistry and calculus, I realized I needed to take a different approach to studying.

Instead of feeling pressured to ace every exam, I learned to appreciate my professor's enthusiasm, and to form my own questions about the material. My focus became to understand and to teach the curriculum to other students in office hours, peer tutoring, and review sessions. As I embraced the challenge and joy of learning, my grades and morale improved. I may have graduated with a bachelor's of Biology and of Spanish, but my educational journey is far from over!

From studying turtle morphology to conducting qualitative interviews to illustrating plant life cycles, my eagerness to learn led me to professional opportunities as a researcher and tutor. I truly believe that my experience allows me to empathize with students' struggles, and my enthusiasm for learning and teaching is contagious!

My approach as a tutor is to wholistically evaluate a student's performance by providing ample opportunities to demonstrate strengths and areas for improvement.

In my experience as a student, I found that the best way to learn was to teach. My students take me through their thought process to demonstrate their clarity of understanding- or areas of confusion. From there, we narrow in on memorization strategies, practice drills, and custom assignments so that students may reach their full potential.

My lessons, which are intended for late elementary, high school, and introductory college courses, include customized lesson plans that tailor to a student's interest with one on one explanations, detailed illustrations, and individualized assignments. For example, a student interested in neuroscience and learning about statistics would learn AP curriculum as well as learn to interpret data indicating prominent neuroscience breakthroughs from peer reviewed literature. I also foster student creativity through encouraging alternative study assignments, such as interpreting biological systems through the lens of art, practicing safe chemistry experiments at home, and creating graphic novels for Spanish language. By making learning fun and approachable, students may overcome mental barriers to their progress.

What sets me apart is my eagerness, enthusiasm, and empathy for my students, and my dedication to their wellness inside the classroom and out. Over my eight years as a tutor, I have accepted clients of all ages, backgrounds, and disability status; I believe anyone can improve their lives through education as long as they have the ganas (desire) !
