About Sylvia
I can provide pages and pages of written testimonials from current and former students. I love what I do and my students can feel that, to the point that friendly relationships of mutual trust are established. My backgroud includes classroom and face-to face teaching, as well as online teaching through Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc., for individuals or groups. I was hired as a consultant for the Centre for Canadian Langage Benchmarks to design tests to assess newcomers to Canada in terms of the language skills they would need to succeed at various jobs and I continue to work in environments where diversity and inclusion are respected As an example, my earler training in Special Education has allowed me to work effectively with learners with ADHD or who are on the Autism Spectrum.

My students, whether children, adults, professionals or government department managers, learn while laughing, as I explore creative pathways, including humour, to bring out their potential and help them reach their personal and professional goals.
I take an individualized approach based on my studenr's specific needs. If they are learning English as a Second Language, for example, I am experiwnced in assessung skills and establishing placement levels. I cover speaking, reading, writing and listening skills, as they qre all inter-related, focusing on vocabulary for workplace and/or social situations; working on English syllable stress and timing, often applying my music performing background to point out the rhythm of the language. For those who want to improve their writing, I address vocabulary and syntax including work- related terminology; examine overly- wordy documents and encourage my students to edit their wiek and the woek of others ruthlessly! So, lesson plans are tailored to each student, since their backgrounds, learning styles and objectives must all be taken into account.
