About Noah
I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2022 with a B.S. in Biology and a chemistry minor. In college I served as a Teaching Assistant for Anatomy and Physiology where I held comprehensive exam review sessions, answered questions during lecture, and tutored a number of students one-on-one. While in college I also contributed curricular content for the Molecular Biology program and published a scholarly, peer-reviewed, paper on the use of active-learning approaches in STEM education. These formative experiences in education have given me a nuanced understanding of how exam questions are produced and the best ways to prepare for high-stakes assessments. I've been tutoring online for a number of years in the following subjects: high school chemistry, high school biology, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, Molecular Biology, Organic Chemistry, Genetics, and Biochemistry.
After graduating from UNC I worked briefly for a biotech company where I genetically engineered vectors to produce antimicrobial peptides. After this I worked as a Research Associated at the UNC Department of Biochemistry studying epigenetics in cancer. I am current a volunteer Medical Assistant at a free clinic in my community and will be starting medical school in the summer of 2024.

I believe in an approach to tutoring that utilizes multiple modalities and presentations of singular concepts in order to firmly cement learning. I love using diagrams, visual representations, real-world examples, and defintions for concepts. Educational research studies have shown that by utilizing multiple different methods of learning a singular concept, recall and true understanding of that concept is significantly enhanced. Once a student feels comfortable with a given topic I like to use a series of exam-level practice problems that approach that concept from different angles. I've found that this practical approach leaves students feeling exceptionally comfortable during their exams and it dramatically improves test scores.
As a former biochemistry researcher, I understand the practical applications of Chemistry and Biology. I love finding ways to weave real-world examples of how these sciences are used into our sessions. I find this not only enhances learning but makes the sciences more enjoyable and interesting when they add to your understanding of how our world and society works. As a former educational researcher, I have a strong understanding of different pedagogical approaches and the science behind learning. I like to use our tutoring sessions to promote tactful studying and learning strategies. In college I published research on the use of active-learning strategies in STEM and I love referring back to this work during my sessions by finding ways to challenge a student's ability to apply and integrate related concepts.
I have a strong background in both college and high school education having served as a TA for Anatomy and Physiology, having produced curricular content for UNC's Molecular Biology course, and having tutored a number of high schoolers in subjects ranging from high school Chemistry to AP Biology. I am very excited to be working with students to learn about the natural sciences and my goal is nothing short of making these subjects fun, engaging, and simple. On a personal level, I will be matriculating to medical school in July of 2024 and would love to offer my advice to aspiring health-professionals about navigating the admissions processes, the nature of these works, and how the basic sciences are applicable in these areas.
Best,
Noah
