About James
I'm a performer and guitar tutor based in Richmond Upon Thames. I hold a Masters and Bachelors in Music Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I currently teach at St Margaret's School, Bushey and St Helen's School, Northwood, as well as privately from home.
I perform in concert as a soloist and work as an Artist for Live Music Now, performing in specialist settings for children with additional support needs and adults in elderly and dementia care. I'm DBS checked and teach all ages and abilities, both individually and in groups.
My training is classical but I enjoy teaching all styles and instrument types. I have an extensive library of resources and keep up with current materials so my students are learning from the best stuff available. My approach is coaching-led. I build adaptable programmes around each student's goals, mixing technique with performance skills. Students I've worked with have gone on to complete ABRSM and Rockschool certificates.

Lesson structure will vary based on individual goals and ability to practise regularly. I enjoy taking on a coaching role and advise carefully on how to create realistic targets to practise towards. I believe that technique is a vessel for which performance flourishes, and enjoy focusing on both aspects in the lesson.

James is an Artist on the Live Music Now Scotland Scheme joining us in 2023. His musicianship is outstanding and he entered the scheme through a highly competitive audition process. James is self aware, reflective and has engaged audiences brilliantly so far!
James has great experience as a teacher, working in a variety of settings and in a variety of styles designed to suit the students needs. He is enthusiastic, caring and understanding of the challenges that come with learning a complex skill such as playing a musical instrument, but will offer sound advice and guidance for making things as easy and accessible to musicians of all ages and experience.
