About Robert

Greetings, everyone. I am Rob, a 35-year-old teacher born in the United Kingdom, raised in the United States, and of Armenian descent. Currently, however, I am residing in the United Arab Emirates as a high-school philosophy teacher and an IELTS examiner. I have a 120-hour TESOL certificate, and dual master's degree; one in Education and another in Philosophy.
Teaching is my passion, and I have been fortunate to have many successful students, from all around the globe, throughout my career. I have a strong background in education and philosophy, which I believe has equipped me with the necessary skills to help my students achieve their academic goals.
As an IELTS examiner, I have a deep understanding of the exam format and what it takes to succeed. I use this knowledge to help prepare my students for the exam, ensuring that they have the necessary skills to achieve the best possible score.

About the lesson

As a tutor, I mainly use a communicative approach that focuses on the individual needs and learning styles of each student. I believe that effective teaching requires adapting to the unique strengths, weaknesses, and preferences of each individual learner.
Some key techniques I employ include asking probing questions to gauge understanding and identify areas needing more focus, providing clear explanations and examples to illustrate key concepts, and encouraging active participation through practice problems, discussions, and hands-on activities. I also utilize effective praising and controlled correction, integrate role-plays into my lessons, and create mock conversational contexts where we learn practical and context-specific vocabulary and phrases. Additionally, I offer constructive feedback and guidance to help students improve, and adapt my pace, language, and teaching style based on the student's cues and progress.
A typical tutoring session with me follows a structured yet flexible format designed to optimize learning and engagement. We begin by greeting each other and creating a calm, friendly environment conducive to focused study. Next, we review the previous lesson and any assigned homework, ensuring that the student has a solid grasp of the material and providing clarification for any lingering questions or areas of confusion. I then introduce and explain new concepts, utilizing a variety of teaching techniques such as examples, analogies, and interactive exercises to solidify understanding and make the material accessible and engaging for the student. The bulk of the session is dedicated to guided practice, where the student works through problems and applies the learned concepts, with me providing ongoing guidance, feedback, and clarification as needed. Finally, we wrap up the session by summarizing the key takeaways and assigning relevant homework to reinforce the concepts covered, setting the stage for continued growth and mastery.
A few things that distinguish me as a tutor are my exemplary patience and positivity, insistence on innovation in teaching, and my vast knowledge in other disciplines, particularly science and philosophy, which might have equipped me with a better grasp on the tutoring process, and which might provide my students with better reasons to develop trust in me as an instructor. I tutor students of all ages and levels, from elementary school through college and beyond. My lessons are tailored to the specific needs of each student. All are welcome.
