About Lissa

こんにちは！

I am Lissa! I have studied Japanese for 9 years and graduated from SFSU with associates degree in Japanese language in 2023. I have been living and working full time as a teacher in Japan since then! I have had a huge interest in Japanese language and culture since I was a child, and I have had so much fun progressing in the language. When I first started studying Japanese I was a 15 year old high school student with a lot of ambition but not many options for serious study available to me. I was overwhelmed by the Japanese language's various writing systems (especially Kanji) and grammar structure, but I gave it my all and studied hard! I am now at a level where I'm able to live and work in Japan with ease, speaking to coworkers, filling out paperwork, and not only understanding but fully engaging in complex conversations. (for my J-drama and anime fans, I am also able to watch Japanese TV and movies without subtitles! ;) ) I know studying Japanese can seem daunting, but I promise you it can be so much fun! The process of learning a language has helped me build my own confidence and I've become more comfortable making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. Even now I still make mistakes! My lessons can be as laid back or as vigorous as you need, but my goal is that it's also fun! Learning a language is exciting and rewarding, especially in the beginning, so let's have fun studying!

About the lesson

I believe learning a language should be fun and enjoyable!

I am flexible and can structure lessons around various materials, depending on what you are looking for. If you are a student taking Japanese classes for a grade I will work around the textbooks you are using in class. If you are not taking Japanese classes for a grade, we can work out of any textbook (I find that the Genki textbooks are a great place to start). If you are on a budget, there are various free online resources that we can work with.
I will use as much Japanese in our lessons as possible so that you can become comfortable with the language and gradually progress to a conversational level. I want to know why you are studying Japanese and what your goals are! I will build my lessons around your personal goals. For example, if you have a trip to Japan coming up, we can focus of Japanese you will need for travel by going over specific vocabulary and practice conversations with role-play. Or, maybe your studying for the JLPT, we will go over important grammar structures and kanji characters.
My aim is that we get you to where you want to be in your language learning goals, and that we have fun doing it!
