About Maria

I have been a school science/maths teacher and a science tutor for over 28 years! I invigilated exams and marked GCSE papers through COVID. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with various exam boards including AQA and Edexcel. Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide range of students, both in school and through private tuition, and in after school clubs and charity groups where I have supported students to improve their understanding, confidence and examination performance.

My experience teaching Science, combined with many years of private tutoring, has enabled me to develop a clear understanding of the areas students commonly find difficult and the misconceptions that can prevent them from progressing. I am experienced in quickly identifying gaps in knowledge and adapting my teaching to explain challenging concepts in a way that makes sense to each individual student.

I support students across Key stage 3 and 4 for GCSE's / iGCSEs - whether it's higher or foundation Combined Science, or the Triple science route covering separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

About the lesson

I genuinely LOVE tutoring! There is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a student have that all-important “lightbulb moment” — when something they have struggled to understand at school suddenly clicks, and they go from feeling unsure to answering questions with confidence and ease. Those moments are what make tutoring so worthwhile for me.

I believe that Science should be fun, engaging and memorable. My lessons often include humour, stories and the occasional silly tale to help students understand and, most importantly, remember what we have covered. I want my students to enjoy learning as well as make progress — and I am often told that they wish I were their school teacher!

Of course, having fun along the way is great - but the results are FANTASTIC! This year, all of my GCSE students achieved grades 7–9, and my only Foundation student achieved the top possible grade of 5,5. Year after year, I help students make significant progress, with an average improvement of around two grades.

However, tutoring is a partnership, and great results require commitment from the student too. I work closely with my students to encourage them to put in the necessary effort, while giving them the tools and confidence they need to succeed. This includes effective revision techniques, past-paper practice, exam-question support, exam technique and plenty of encouragement and motivation.

I am also a mum of two teenagers — one currently studying at Bristol University, while the other is applying to Oxford and Imperial College for the coming academic year. Through my experience with my own children and their friends, my school pupils and my private students, I believe I have become particularly good at listening to young people, understanding where they may be struggling and quickly spotting misconceptions.

My aim is always to make students feel comfortable asking questions, confident enough to make mistakes and motivated to keep improving. I combine high expectations with a friendly, supportive approach — and I love seeing the confidence and results that follow.

Maria has helped me so much. She made science actually fun to learn.

My cousin recommended her to me because she said the same thing. I would learn from her in 1 hour what I would have spent a week or more learning at school. And she gave me exam questions at the end of the lessons so that I could practice answering the topic we'd just gone through in a way that would get me the most marks. And she would help with my maths too. Rearranging equations was always something I struggled with but now I understood that I could tackle physics questions. I know my science grades are better because of her. Thank you again Maria.
