About Eleanor

I am an early career teacher having graduated from university in 2023. I feel like this helps me engage with my students as I often share some similar interests to them, and use these in my lessons to make them approachable, and relevant to their lives! One of my biggest strengths as a practitioner is my relationships with my students, and I believe mutual respect and trust is the foundation of unlocking the pupils fullest potential. Every child needs a champion!

I have a deep love and passion for my subject, which I will always try to share. In an ever scary and changing world with so much misinformation, the skills taught in English are imperative to enabling your child is equipped to analyse, understand, and engage with the world around them. This is my why. Why I am a teacher, and why I always strive to make sure my pupils leave a lesson better prepared for the day ahead of them. I remember being at school and not feeling engaged with subjects where I felt teachers were disinterested, so my love for English is at the core of who I am as a person and a teacher. Pupils need to contextualise and understand why they’re learning what they are. What’s the point? The point is to make them as well rounded and independent as they can be. The content is the fun stuff, but the skills are what are paramount in perfecting.

My sessions are adapted from classroom lessons designed by myself and experts for KS3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) and KS4 (GCSE, Years 10 & 11). My teaching is based on the pedagogical and research backed information, so I can tailor sessions to best suit your child.

The typical length of a session is one hour, however I am always happy to extend or shorten depending on the pupils ability, time, and financial situation.

I am a classroom teacher of English at secondary school, and have experience tutoring students.

My teaching approach always begins with retrieval practice, and assessing previous knowledge and learning. This enables any adjustments to the rest of the lesson to be made, so I can ensure the correct knowledge is solidified into the students schema (memory).

I will proceed to offer contextual information, and setting out lesson expectations. This allows the pupil to understand what is happening, and again, leave room for quick adjustments, something that I have experienced during classroom teaching.

The main part of my lessons involve learning the skill, information, and core knowledge that is needed. This includes discussion time, which I believe is key to accessing and understanding the critical thinking needed to achieve the top grades in English.

I then give time for the skill or knowledge to be applied. This can be altered depending on pupil ability and confidence, and the one-to-one nature of tutoring means they will get a strong sense of guidance when needed, as well as independent work that can be thoroughly marked to steer the direction of future sessions.
