About Asiloé

I am a retired University Professor with more than 40 years of experience teaching Chemistry to undergraduate students, as well as supervising and mentoring students at different levels. I am bilingual (Spanish and English). I have a PhD degree in Chemistry from Keele University, UK. Area of research: Crystallography. Love teaching!

About the lesson

I have the ability to make difficult subjects, such as Chemistry, easier to understand and more interesting by connecting concepts to practical examples and encouraging students to ask questions. My teaching experience covers a broad range of Chemistry, including basic concepts such as atoms and molecules, the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry and equilibrium, as well as more advanced areas such as thermodynamics, kinetics and materials science. I have also developed teaching materials and organized workshops to help other university academics improve their teaching of Chemistry. I am bilingual in Spanish and English, and I enjoy adapting my teaching approach to the individual needs and level of each student. My goal is not only to help students improve their academic performance, but also to give them the confidence and critical-thinking tools.
The methodology that I apply when I teach chemistry, could be summarized as follows:
1. I will prepare a class (slides, briefing papers and problem sheets) with the principles and concepts that the student needs to understand at the end of the meeting with me. The class will be based on the material supplied previously by the student.
2. The information will be delivered in an organized way so the teaching session will be more effective. First, the principle is taught intuitively using simple examples. Later, the principle will be express in the form of an equation. The physical meaning of each term of the equation will be fully explained. Finally, the mathematical manipulations needed to deal with problem solving will be explained and exemplified. The use of the correct units and their transformation will be emphasized throughout.
3. Testing understanding will be done by doing `plenty of exercises and problems to gain confidence in elaborating procedures to manipulate equations. Also, the student will need to learn how to search for numerical data in graphs and tables.
4. Finally, the student will be confronted with questions that might have been raised during the class session.
