About Juan

My journey with language began on the ground, not in a classroom. I spent two years living in rural Kenya as a missionary, fully immersed in Swahili and local tribal dialects — not just learning the language, but using it daily to connect with people, build trust, and serve communities. That foundation led me deeper into East and Central Africa, where I became one of the few U.S. farmers fluent in Swahili working in post-conflict regions of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There, I advised on agricultural development projects that brought hope and resilience to communities rebuilding from war. Driven by a belief that language is the first step to lasting impact, I started my own farm management company and later returned to the U.S., where I continued using my skills to support refugee resettlement as a Swahili translator in Salt Lake City. Today, I serve as an Officer in the U.S. Army Civil Affairs — trained and certified as a Swahili linguist — where I use my experience and fluency to bridge gaps between cultures, support humanitarian missions, and build partnerships in some of the world’s most sensitive environments. My language training is not just academic — it's tested, lived, and proven in real-world situations where clear communication can change lives.

I learned Swahili on the go — living in Kenya, translating in Rwanda and Congo, and absorbing the language from the best teachers in the world: children. That means my approach is immersive, intuitive, and focused on real-life communication, not just memorizing vocabulary.

I emphasize positive feedback, a growth mindset, and the belief that anyone can become fluent with the right tools, practice, and encouragement. If you’re willing to show up and make mistakes, I’ll help you turn them into fluency.

My Tutoring Style & Techniques:

Conversational First: We start speaking Swahili from day one. No pressure to be perfect — just start talking and having fun with the language.

Practical Language: I teach the phrases and vocabulary you’ll actually use — with locals, at markets, in meetings, or during travel.

Cultural Context: Every word comes with a story. You’ll understand the why, when, and how of Swahili the way locals use it.

Learn Like a Child: I use repetition, rhythm, and real conversation games — the same way I learned from East African kids.

A Typical Lesson Might Include:
-A warm-up Swahili convo or scenario
-Quick review of previous phrases and corrections (with encouragement!)
-A mini lesson on a theme: greetings, travel, negotiations, meetings, aid work, or farming
-Real-time role play or dialogue practice
-Cultural pro tips to avoid awkward mistakes
-Wrap-up, feedback, and a takeaway challenge for real-world practice

Who This Is For:
-Travelers, Aid Workers, Missionaries, Peace Corps, NGO staff heading to Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, or Rwanda
-Students & Professionals working on degrees or careers in International Development, Agriculture, Global Health, or African Studies
-Military personnel deploying to East Africa
-Heritage learners reconnecting with language and culture

Whether you're prepping for a trip, mission, deployment, field research, or just want to connect deeper with East African people and culture — these lessons are built for you. I meet you where you are and get you talking like a local.
