About Anupama

I am a Sitarist teaching Lucknow-Shahjahanpur baaz (Ilyaaz khani) on sitar for over 20 years. I have worked with DAV - India's most prestigious college chain. I have performed on stage invariably including Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan. I am a UGC accredited lecturer with an M.Phil in Sitar from Punjab University.

About the lesson

My teaching technique is solely practical using Sitar. I start with basics and teach all techniques by playing them first. The students follow the instructions and I help them through it all. I make sure that I teach the students all the techniques to be a successful sitar player, that no book can teach you. The classes are open to all. I also teach +1, +2, bachelors and Master program of Indian curriculum. I teach Music Reading and Music Theory of Indian Classical Music, in which along with other topics, I help the students to know the historical developments of music in India.

Sitar is difficult to learn but with her authentic knowledge of Indian Classical Music and her passion for it, I was able to gain a lot from the classes.

Perfect! Anupama is such a great teacher and person, inside and out. She's very patient when I'm learning something new on the sitar, she gives great advice and she's respectful.

One of the main reasons why I enjoy being taught by Anupama, is because she goes into great detail by explaining what it is she's doing on the sitar to help her student learn faster and easier.

Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?
I teach Hindustani Classical music Instrumental and I find it the most wonderful art form as it is the sublimest of all other art forms.
I chose to teach it because visual art forms have their short impact on brain, while music leaves a long lasting imprint and scientific studies have proved that Music can even revive certain dead cells of the body and brain, which cannot be revived otherwise.
What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?
My family was the motivation and all those sitarists whom we know as real performers. I started teaching because I wanted to spread what I had learnt from my Gurus.
How does your work help society?
Coming generations need a lot of stability, patience and anxiety and anger management. Hindustani Music can do wonders for them.
If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?
My Gurus are my role models in the first place. I look up with respect to all those who paved path for the globalisation of Hindustani Classical Music.
Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.
Outside music I work on different issues which present society is dealing with. I am a Life coach, Motivational Speaker. I reach out to all educational Institutions to spread awareness regarding many a social banes.
Besides I take a free virtual Classical Vocal Music class on Sundays for girls for one hour.
Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?
If we live life to the fullest, we create new stories everyday. Everybody should create their own.
Music makes this happen as it enhances your capacity to live and enjoy life to the fullest.
I feel whoever might be reading this may create their own anecdotes and may not be interested in mine.
