About Lynden

I have over 10 years experience working as a software engineer, I love understanding things thoroughly and I especially love helping others to understand things that they're struggling with. I work hard to rephrase things in terms you can understand, while still making sure you understand the deeper concepts. I also have a current Working With Children Check. My main language is C++, but I have experience with many other languages and am comfortable tutoring whatever language you might be trying to learn.

About the lesson

I can help explain things in a simpler way while getting at the core reasoning behind why programming is done the way it is.

Perfect! I came to Lynden for help with a university programming course after failing the exam hurdle. He was patient and never made me feel embarrassed for asking basic questions, and as someone who thought I was bad at coding, that meant a lot. Instead of just giving me answers he'd ask the right questions until I finally understood the concept myself. After several lessons, I noticed that whenever I solved a coding problem I'd also ask myself "how would Lynden approach this?", which helped refine my thinking. He'd point out errors in my approach before they led me down the wrong path, and even when my autotests were passing he'd show me a better way to solve it. The rest was just drilling extra practice, and I realised coding wasn't such a big deal after all.

Things that used to fall apart under exam pressure became muscle memory. This term I cleared the hurdle comfortably and finished with a Distinction. Highly recommend him for anyone struggling with programming courses. Thank you!

I hope you and your son remember that when someone is new to programming or is learning a new programming language, it's very normal for things to feel completely illogical or meaningless, until suddenly much of it clicks into place all at once. After that point, learning new bits seems a lot more doable.

The pricing reflects dedicated 1-on-1 tutoring time, and is inclusive of a reasonable amount of preparation time - reading materials you provide, familiarising myself with the specifics of what you're trying to get help with, etc.
Having said that, you'll get more out of each session if you're also prepared!

If you're not able to afford my listed rate, please suggest an amount you're comfortable with! I tutor because I genuinely enjoy it, so I'm likely to accept your offer as long as I have the time.

Note: I will also answer any text based questions for free on a best-effort basis.
