About Yecenia

¡Hola! I'm Yecenia, a native Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico, psychology graduate, and lifelong learner with a passion for languages, cultures, and the fascinating ways we connect with one another.

I believe learning Spanish should open doors, spark curiosity, and bring people closer together—not leave you buried in grammar books! My goal is to make learning an experience you look forward to, whether you're taking your first steps in Spanish or ready to take your fluency to the next level.

My background brings together psychology, education, bilingual communication, and international studies. I've worked in educational settings with elementary school students, supported research in sociology and anthropology, and gained experience helping adults understand information, develop skills, and navigate unfamiliar situations. These experiences have shaped my appreciation for different learning needs, clear communication, and the importance of creating an encouraging environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and growing.

I'm also passionate about exploring the connections between language, culture, identity, and society. My interdisciplinary studies have taken me across European and Latin American studies, Indigenous studies, and Afrodiasporic studies, with a particular interest in multiculturalism, transculturalism, diversity, and inclusion. This perspective informs my appreciation for the incredible variety of voices, histories, traditions, and expressions found throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

And, of course, Puerto Rico is part of that story! As a native speaker from the Caribbean, I love the richness of Spanish as a living language—from everyday expressions and regional variations to the humor, warmth, and cultural influences that make communication so meaningful.

As your tutor, I bring curiosity, patience, enthusiasm, and a personalized approach to learning. I'm here to help you move beyond the fear of making mistakes, discover what works for you, and celebrate your progress along the way.

My approach to teaching Spanish is practical, interactive, culturally enriching, and tailored to you. The goal? To help you understand the language, enjoy the learning process, and feel increasingly confident using Spanish in real life.

My teaching approach

I believe learning a language should be an adventure, not a chore! As a native Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico, I bring the language to life through everyday conversations, useful expressions, real-world situations, and fascinating cultural connections. My approach combines personalized instruction, interactive practice, and encouragement, creating a welcoming space where questions are always welcome and mistakes are simply part of learning.

Drawing on my background in psychology, education, and interdisciplinary cultural and social studies, I recognize that everyone learns differently. I adapt my teaching techniques to your goals, interests, pace, and learning needs, helping you build skills and confidence one step at a time.

What can you expect from a lesson?

Every lesson is tailored to your level and goals, but a typical session may include:

- A warm-up and quick review: Revisit what you've learned and celebrate your progress.
- A new language adventure: Explore useful vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, or expressions through clear explanations and practical examples.
- Let's talk! Practice speaking through guided conversations, role-playing, games, or real-life scenarios that make Spanish useful beyond the classroom.
- Culture beyond the textbook: Discover music, traditions, humor, everyday expressions, and the diverse cultural influences that shape Spanish-speaking communities.
- A confident finish: Review your progress and identify practical ways to keep practicing between lessons.

We'll use English when it helps clarify a concept, then gradually increase your Spanish practice as your confidence grows. No two learners are exactly alike, so no two learning journeys need to be identical!

What makes my lessons different?

I'm more than a native Spanish speaker sharing vocabulary and grammar rules. My background in psychology and education, combined with my interdisciplinary studies in European and Latin American societies and cultures, Indigenous studies, and Afrodiasporic studies, gives me a broad perspective on the relationship between language, identity, history, and culture.

My academic interests also include multiculturalism, transculturalism, diversity, and inclusion. These perspectives inspire me to approach language learning with curiosity and an appreciation for the many ways people communicate, express themselves, and experience the world.

From Puerto Rican expressions and Caribbean traditions to the diverse Indigenous and African diasporic influences found across Latin America, we'll have opportunities to explore the cultural connections that bring Spanish to life. You'll learn not only how to communicate, but also how to recognize cultural nuances and appreciate the diversity within the Spanish-speaking world.

And don't worry—we won't spend every lesson buried in history books! We'll keep things interactive, relevant, and fun, with activities and conversations tailored to your goals.

My aim is to make learning feel personal, purposeful, and enjoyable. We'll work together to build on your strengths and turn “I'm afraid I'll say it wrong” into “Let me give it a try!”
