About Ivy

I am a singing tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre with a vocal performance specialism. I have worked with over 160 students including West End auditionees, independent recording artists, church choir members, and adults who simply want to sing confidently at their friend's wedding. My musical theatre background gives me a strong foundation in acting through song, which means I teach singing as a communicative art, not just a technical exercise. I have developed a specialism in helping students with vocal tension and anxiety — students who have been told they cannot sing often make the most dramatic progress in my studio because they have been miseducated, not poorly gifted. I maintain an active performance schedule in small-venue musical theatre productions, which keeps my performance instincts sharp and my teaching relevant.

About the lesson

My vocal teaching is grounded in the science of how the voice actually works, and I explain the physiology of singing in plain language from the very first lesson because students who understand what their voice is doing develop far more quickly than those who treat it as a mystery. My primary technical specialism is in Contemporary Commercial Music voice — belt, mix, head voice, and the transitions between them — and I use this expertise to help students access the full range of their voice rather than relying on the same register for every note. I begin every lesson with a somatic warm-up that addresses the whole body, not just the throat, because tension anywhere in the body migrates upward into the voice and restricts both quality and range. Ear training is embedded in every vocal session through interval singing, chord tone matching, and melodic dictation because a singer who cannot hear accurately is working with one hand tied behind their back. I use acoustic recordings made on a high-quality microphone during lessons rather than phone recordings because the quality of feedback a singer receives depends entirely on the quality of what they can hear. For students preparing auditions I coach the entire package — song choice, slate introduction, physical presentation, and managing nerves — not just vocal technique. My lessons include explicit work on vocal health including hydration, warm-up protocols, rest strategies, and what to do when the voice is under strain. I teach students to self-coach using a checklist of their own identified habits so they can practise intelligently when I am not present. I work extensively with musical theatre students on the integration of text, character, and vocal technique. Every student I teach leaves with a clearer understanding of their own voice than they arrived with.
