About Michaela

I have been studying for a considerable amount of time and know how frustrating it can be to struggle to grasp a topic! The most useful thing I have discovered along the way is how to find and embrace my learning style. Through tutoring, I've helped many students find theirs along the way too as there's time to present material in a number of less complicated ways different to what they usually encounter in lectures. It's great seeing difficult concepts 'click' for people.

About the lesson

I'm a final year PhD student in Biochemistry doing a largely Bioinformatics-based project at the University of Otago. I have a First Class BSc honours degree in Genetics. Alongside this, I also have a DipGrad endorsed in Statistics, obtaining academic awards for high achievement in this program.

I have been employed as a laboratory demonstrator, departmental tutor and marker for the University of Otago's Department of Mathematics and Statistics as well as the Department of Genetics since 2020. I have been tutoring these subjects privately since 2018.

I have considerable experience working in the R coding language from my degrees and postgraduate study, so am available to offer any general help with this as well.

I'm available for tutoring any level of university paper in the subjects of genetics, statistics or biomedical sciences. I am also able to help any first-year subject in microbiology, immunology, cell biology, anatomy, physiology or general biology.

I also have experience tutoring high school science, NCEA level biology, general science and standards in statistics.

I offer hour long tutoring sessions, which I am available to do in person in Dunedin or via zoom to any other location. I'm happy to do individual or group tutoring.

Usually my approach to tutoring is for students to either give me an idea of a specific topic they might be struggling with beforehand which I then can go over with them in our session, or for them to come to me with specific questions to go over during the lesson. For most specific subjects or university papers I have previously tutored, I have prepared summaries or lecture notes I am able to provide after each lesson for the topic we have covered.
