About Stephen

I am a classroom teacher with over two decades of experience in both the public and private systems. I have helped two students achieve top ten results in Modern History, one in a prestigious independent school and one in a comprehensive public school. I have taught most topics in the Ancient and Modern syllabus.

Having marked the HSC for 15 years, I have expert knowledge of what is required in the examination. I have marked across three sections of the HSC Ancient History examination and have an outstanding knowledge of the most effective essay and short/long answer response structures.

I am an active leader in History teaching in NSW, regularly presenting at History Teachers’ Association (HTA) conferences and contributing to the HTA journal Teaching History. I am also a member of the board of directors of the HTA. I have also written numerous textbooks, including as lead author of the Cambridge University Press History Transformed Stage 4 book and a recent textbook with Small Caps Publishing for the Ancient History core study, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

As a Research Associate in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at The University of Sydney, I am also a leader in my field of research. I have one book published by the University of Liverpool Press on Athenian history, with another two books under contract, one on Ancient History and one as lead author on historiography, the focus of the History Extension course. I also regularly present at academic conferences and am currently organising an international conference on fifth century Athenian history, scheduled for 2023.

About the lesson

I work with students to determine their level of knowledge. This provides the point from which we can start to extend their knowledge and develop their ability to use this knowledge in effective examination responses.

Most HSC students work effectively in 1.5 hours sessions – younger students might need less time to allow them to process information and skill development more efficiently. A plan is developed on a term basis, which will address the specific content issues that need to be developed and extended in conjunction with the student’s classwork.

A session usually begins with a discussion with about what has been done over the week, identifying problem areas of content or skill development. A targeted content area will then be explored using content, sources and discussion, often with activities to develop historical understanding and deepen knowledge. The student will then work to develop a response that utilises the content and skills being developed. This would then be completed by the student and sent to me for feedback.

What makes me different is, through decades of experience and outstanding content knowledge, I can quickly identify the areas of knowledge or skills that require improvement, diagnose the issue and work with the student to improve their understanding of what is required to succeed.
