About Jason

I’m Jason, and I particularly like working with guitarists who have accumulated a lot of information but still do not feel free on the instrument. You may know a surprising number of chords. You may have learned several scale positions. You may even play difficult songs. But if somebody changes the key, removes the tab, or asks you to create your own part, suddenly the instrument feels unfamiliar again.

My teaching is built around relationships rather than collections. I would rather show you how three chord shapes connect than give you thirty unrelated shapes to memorize. I would rather make one scale useful than ask you to learn five new ones. And I would rather have you hear a small phrase and reproduce it than play a long exercise without listening to what the notes are doing.

That also means theory will be very practical. If we talk about intervals, you find them. If we discuss harmony, you play it. If we look at a chord progression, we find several ways to voice it. I do not want theory to become another list of information sitting beside your guitar knowledge.

This approach tends to click with self-taught guitarists, songwriters, and players who have reached the stage where collecting more tutorials no longer seems to solve the problem. If you want the fretboard to begin feeling smaller, more predictable, and more connected, that is exactly what we will work toward.

If your guitar knowledge lives in separate boxes—one box for chords, another for scales, another for riffs—my lessons are designed to connect those boxes. We may begin with something as ordinary as a chord progression you already know. Instead of playing the same open chord shapes every time, we locate the three most important notes inside each chord and find them on a smaller group of strings. Suddenly the same progression can exist in several places on the neck. You are no longer moving because a diagram told you where the next shape is; you are moving because you understand what notes the harmony actually needs.

A technique I use frequently is triad mapping. Rather than immediately covering the fretboard with large scale patterns, we take small three-note chord shapes and follow them through a progression. You begin seeing how one note can stay in place while another moves only one fret. This is especially useful if you want smoother rhythm guitar, better accompaniment, or more interesting chord choices without learning huge stretches or increasingly complicated chord names.

For rhythm, I want your picking or strumming hand to understand the pulse even during the moments when you do not hit the strings. We can take one chord, mute the strings, and practice the rhythm as pure percussion first. The hand keeps moving through a consistent subdivision while we decide exactly which movements produce sound. Then the chord progression returns. This separates “I cannot change chords quickly enough” from “I never really had control of the rhythm in the first place.”

Ear training also goes directly onto the guitar. I may play a short two- or three-note phrase and have you find it without showing you where it is. At first, this might take a while. That is fine. The goal is to build the connection between what you hear and where your fingers go. Eventually, instead of finding a scale shape and wondering what to play with it, you start hearing a small musical idea and searching for the notes that create it. That reversal can completely change how improvisation feels.
